D’addario- horrible for offsets? Just me?

Post by RoséBear » Mon Mar 18, 2019 4:46 pm

I broke two strings at my gigs over the weekends. Both high E’s, broke at the ball end. A common occurance. This is a brand new guitar, 2018 left handed American pro. I put a mastery on it as well. I had trouble dialing in the intonation just right as well- the A was consistently flat.

Fast forward to today, I emailed woody from mastery to see what he suggested. I didn’t even tell him I used D’addario 10’s and he told me right from the getgo “that’s from using d’addario’s. Try GHS.”

So I bought maybe 7 boomers yesterday, strung up the guitar today. They feel a bit different but my intonation particularly on the lower strings, was out of wack. I fixed it easily and it was consistent. Anyone else have similar experiences with d’addario And offsets? I’ve been using them for years, but now that I have a jazzmaster as my main axe, I’m very much considering switching to boomers

D'addario has fantastic customer service. If you still have the packaging, contact them and send them the batch numbers. They'll tell you where to find it. It could be that the strings are from a bad batch. If so, they'll send you replacement sets - I've had this happen with a few packs I bought (all at the same time) in the past. Otherwise, they're great strings - been using their flats for over a decade..

I did buy a ten pack and then a 3 pack too so that’s very likely. Intonation shouldn’t change by brand correct?

Yep, they're shitty strings all right. No fuckin' good for an offset a-tall, maybe not good for anything else, either.
This is an excellent rectangle

Can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic. 😂 if not, what strings do you use?

I really like d’addarios. But they don’t really seem to like my jazzmaster

high e strings constantly unwind on Jazzmasters and Jaguars. Stopped using Daddario after that. Now I use Fender Bullets. Cant comment about other string brands.

He could be right. Or it could just be that more offset players use D’addarios than other strings. I think they're the highest selling strings, right ? So he then hears more reports of broken D’addarios. Gotta be aware of basic maths when forming opinions. ;)

I know a lot of people that swear by the bullets. No problems unwinding since?

Ernie Balls, usually. I dabble in others, GHS was OK but I didn't have as good an experience as most people seem to with them. EBs are fine, I know what to expect, etc etc etc

D'addarios were just a complete instant shitshow when I tried them on my jazzmaster. Nothing worked right, and the high e snapped in no time. I'm a very light player, too. I stuck a better e on there and then my A string shit the bed too, that had never happened before even with the cheapest strings I could get. It just gave up the ghost and pulled all skinny right at the nut. No snapping, just pfft, the core lost its shape. Pure fucking shit, those strings.

Nope. Not once. It was a nightmare before I changed. All my other guitars have Daddarios on them.

Interesting how your A and E strings had problems same as mine. I just threw on GHS and had to reintonate. The saddles look more “normal” now and the intonation appears more consistent.

Crazy. I’ll have to give the bullets a go too

If you compare string fixation on strat trem vs LP tailpiece vs tele ferrules vs offset trem, they're all very different. But offset trem is the only one where there is friction / bending at the ball (and that's not even including the 'rubbing on the trem screws' thing). Maybe some strings handle that better.
