Best affordable Bass VI strings

Post by JPCordingley » Thu Apr 30, 2020 1:59 am

I have a Squier VI that I've had for a number of years now. She's spent most of her life strung with baritone strings, but I'm wanting to put bass strings on her again, because I don't own a bass guitar and want to lat some bass lines down while we're all in lockdown. I could buy a set of D'addarios for £17 but I'm put off by the fact that the low E is only a .084. I don't want to spend £50 on La Bellas because I'm not made of money. From experience the Ernie Ball bass VI set aren't long enough for Fender/Squier VIs because of the vibrato.

Has anyone got a solution that won't cost an arm and a leg? Ideally a set that is easily available in the UK.

Newtone are great, although they are handmade to order, so you have to wait a couple of weeks.

In addition to their standard set, they offer custom gauges. Very high quality strings, made in England.

If you need them in a pinch, you can get the Ernie Ball strings (Ernie Ball 2837 Slinky Silhouette Short-Scale 6-String Bass Strings). I think they will fit a Bass VI. I know they fit my Danelectro 6 String bass (30" scale), in any case. The sizes are better and more balanced than the D'addario set.

Kalium makes a custom set. This set I believe: https://kaliummusic.com/product/string- ... u82898f8m/ And they seem like they would be perfect for a Bass VI. They're hybrid guitar strings, as you can't just use Bass Strings as the wraps at the tuning pegs are too big and the balls at the bridge plate are too big.

Edit: Nevermind, the reviews for the Ernie Ball strings on Musicians Friend say they don't fit a Bass VI (too short). Kalium is your best bet.

The Ernie Balls will work on a Baritone neck. I had them on my Warmoth Conversion neck but at 28 and whatever scale it's not long enough for the E string oomph.

I think the EBs are made for a Schecter Hellcat and that's why they don't reach the tuners on a Bass VI 30" scale

So Fender no longer has Bass VI strings in their line? I’m hoarding a precious few sets....

The EBs are made for their Silhouette 6 String Bass model.

Non relevant question but do the Daddario baritone 68 sets fit the VI? is the 1st string long enough?

Ah, that's right! I knew that didn't sound right as I typed it.

I've never had an issue getting the LaBella Bass VI sets, I think I usually get them at around $50 or so bucks and keep them on for a while. And that's with the 0.95 low end string.
