Tele saddles in a JM type bridge?

Post by AWSchmit » Wed Oct 24, 2012 7:45 am

I've been on the forum for a long time and I've never heard of anyone doing this... Have I missed it? Is there something logistically wrong with it? Because I came up with this on my own at some point and it struck me odd that I've never seen it done. After much scouring over the internet I have not found proof of someone else doing this mod, Another reason it stuck me odd was because it's so similar to the Mastery concept that so many people love (A big difference is that it can be nearly free alternative to the mastery)... So I'm going to do it tonight when I get off work. My low E saddle keeps falling and the buzzing in general is driving me nuts, plus the first couple wound strings keep moving out of place... I know that these are all old "problems" with the stock bridge but I've not played on one for so long that it's like this is the first time I've heard of them. Sucks

Anyway, stay tuned if you want to see my results.

I finally finish building a guitar, go to play it, and then remember, "oh yeah, that's right. I suck at playing... Why did I build another guitar again?"

I have definitely seen this somewhere, and now it's really bugging me trying to remember where I saw it! :fp:

I'm in the same boat. I remember someone flipping around their bridge and drilling new holes for some bronze compensated tele saddles. I found it after thinking about doing the same, but I never got around to it. I can't find it searching anymore, but I'm pretty sure it was someone on here.

If you can make this work, sign me up for one. I think I have a JM Bridge laying around, and I'm sure I could buy some compensated Brass Saddles somewhere...

Funny you should bring this up as I was researching on it a few days back for my RI Mustang. I can't find all the threads on it, I think there were like two or three that covered using Telecaster brass saddles on this kind of bridge.

Here's one I found...

Also found this, albeit on a different forum.

I'm going to keep looking, I thought I had book marked the relevant threads from on this forum but apparently I didn't. If I come across the other ones I'm thinking of I'll post them in here. I know there was some talk of it over on shortscale.org as well. Hopefully this helps some what though.

Like it a lot! It's loader and everything sounds and feel way more solid. Now I just need to lathe a couple bushings to press around the posts to keep it from rocking... because I don't find that feature very useful.

Also, as you might notice, be sure to drill the holes bigger than they need to be. I bent the bridge plate at the low E and A when I raised the action on that saddle. The rest where large enough to not do that though.

But yeah. I would do this to any bridge of this type... I'm so sleepy. I'm going to bed. Good night OSG.

Nice bridge mod! Intontion worked fine? My musicmaster has the three tele style saddles and not all strings intonate correctly.

Have you tried compensated saddles?
I had them on a mim duo and they intonated fine.

I would go that way, but it is all original so I just ignore that it is off a little bit. :)

Great idea, it works on Strat bridges too. I just used your basic Stewmac compensated saddles. The intonation is fine. I just filed a flat on the bottom to get them to sit a bit lower, and cut the height screws down (may not be necessary for JM/Jag). They'll definitely go onto my JM when I get one, one difference is that I'd cut some string slots.

My bridge is intonating within one blinking yellow bar on my snark tuner... Close enough for me. I couldn't hear the difference if my life depended on it. But yeah. Works fine for me... Then again, I did just do it the mod.

This is a mod that I could get behind. I'll have to give it a try this weekend.
