I've played 5 string Drop D exclusively now for over 4yrs (not Open G like Keef...I keep the 5th string in standard).
I've always questioned whether a tremolo would stay in tune with just 5 strings. I couldn't get a yes from anyone. Then 2 weeks ago I found my answer on another forum. Some old cat posted that he has been doing it for yrs. That opend the flood gates and heaps of players chimed in to say that they have been playing that way too.
So I was on a mission to buy a Gretsch Hollowbody. I played a Falcon DC in 1 shop and a 6120 in another. I didn't realise you can't reach the top 3 frets on a Gretsch hollowbody without holding your thumb under the board. Bummer...so Gretsch's were out.
Luckily...the 2nd shop had a 60's Jaguar Lacquer (what an awesome guitar !). SOLD
My new Jag sings beautifully with my 5 string set-up. I couldn't be happier.
I would like for "5 string tremolo" to be widely known around the guitar community. Pass it on pls
5 string (Keef) works on a tremolo
