Black Limba HH Jazzmaster Custom Build

Post by HNB » Wed Jul 05, 2017 1:35 pm

I found a seller (headguitar) on ebay who does Jazzmasters in different woods and the listing says that he takes custom requests. I messaged him ahead of time asking if he could do HH with a hardtail sort of like the new Affinity Jazzmaster and he said no problem. (I asked him to set it up so I could use one of the US Fender hardtail bridges vs the Squire one and he also said no problem.) One really nice thing he did was call me to measure where the pickups sat so he could get the routs in the right place. That was really nice and unexpected. Made it so I didn't have to buy a custom guard. Since I hadn't heard of black limba and it looked pretty interesting, I asked him to use that. These are the first pictures he sent me.

When it arrived the treble side of the pickup routs needed a little bit removed to get the humbuckers to sit right.

Through this guitar I found out the pickups in the Affinity Jazzmaster are a little thicker than normal humbuckers. They were bottoming out in the routs but other normal humbuckers I had sat in the routs fine. Here is how it looked with the Affinity loaded guard on it. (Minus the toggle because the rout doesn't accommodate that kind of toggle. Needs to be the typical Jazzy toggle to fit right.)

The Affinity Jazzy neck I got here fit it perfect. Very unusual for me to find a custom body where I didn't have to sand the pocket a little to get the neck to fit right.

It needed a little final finish sanding. Nothing major. Here it is before I rubbed some tung oil on it.

After tung oil. (Just the first coat, but the colors are popping a bit more and the color warmed up a bit.)

He saved the CNC file under my name for me in case I wanted to do another one in a different wood or something. He also adjusted the file with the pickup rout adjustments I did with a chisel so next time it would less adjustment needed. The cost was pretty cheap and the product fits pretty much perfect. Very happy with the body.

The back with one coat of tung oil. Not as crazy as the front, but still pretty wood. :)

Nice precise ferrule holes. :)

Really nice choice on the wood for the body- will be anxious to see the finished guitar! :w00t:

Sanded the Squire logo off so I could do my own custom decal.

Body is looking good. I will probably do four or five more coats.

I love reading about the Jazzmaster builds everyone does but am disappointed every time they don't have a Jazzmaster trem. It is beautiful though.

I don't normally use a tremolo. I have a couple Jazzys and Jags with the usual tremolo. :) I like hardtails for whatever reason.

I really like that Anime a lot and I think Lilith is my favorite. I really enjoy using the mask and name. The mask is offset, so I should earn some points here, right?

New knobs today. :D The ones I ordered I think look a bit better than the black telecaster ones.
