Well, I have to admit that that blue one just looks gorgeous!    Sonic blue with gold guard isn't a bad idea at all after all!  ;)

Did you ever find this out BTW?
No, the seller never responded, but I got an email from a new member on this forum here that says he's in contact with the guys that made it, and they should be able to make some more at a very reasonable price.    As soon as I get more info, I'll post it here!

If another round of gold guards comes around, I'll have to hop on this time. I would like to build a black one and use a gold guard on it  :?

Gold anodized guards

Post by mcjt » Mon Jan 01, 2007 1:17 pm

hey guys, newbie Todd checkin in here...
so i have always wanted a gold guard for my alder 1960 rebuild. not accurate, but hey! i missed gold guard by a few months.... :)
from your postings, i spent a morning emailing to leads and googling....
this is what i have:
1- Andrew who is mentioned in your posts DOES have some gold guards. he will get back to me after the holidays. price so far unknown. i think these are the scot guards. (100 pounds, i believe)
2- i was referred to a company called 'sharp concepts'. they specialize in metal guards. they have Japanese and us tracings for the gold guard, it is made from scratch to your design, they'll happily take your own custom drawing-tracing and make you whatever u want. and anodize it whatever colour you want too- they have a few choicesin colour. price: 105 USD. you can write to them here:
sales@sharp-concepts.com
www.sharp-concepts.com
i already told them there might be a few inquiries from this website.... :D
i'll let you know how this guard turns out
good luck

So it might be possible to get an aluminm guard anodized black just like that one "prototype" Jazzmaster! I think I know what my next project might be  ;D I'm really interested to hear/ see more about these pickguards. $105.00 isn't bad at all in my opinion.

105$ is very reasonable indeed!  I might end up getting one myself... As satisfied as I am with my current gold guard, I'd still prefer to have a 9-hole one!

What a great idea to have a black anodized guard made!  That would look pretty good!

Sounds great to me. I'll have to think this over for my IBM.

it was actually me who got them into making JM pickguards. i have the very first JM gold guard they made. it looks nothing like gold. they didn´t use gold in the anodizing process, but some kind of dye, which resulted in a dull, kinda beige-yellow color. pretty ugly actually. but i got mine a few years ago, so i guess there is a chance they might be doing things differently nowadays.

If their powder coat goldguards are any better that would be the best alternative we have I guess. Has anyone tried the plastic fake gold guards from pickguards.com and stuff?

yep, got one of those too. the "gold" itself looks better, but they are laminated with thick black plastic, and the edges are beveled, so you get a wide black band all along the edge.

the only source for realistic repro gold guards i´ve found (and i´ve been looking log and hard) is andrew short aka andrewaward.

Does andrewaward still make them and can he make them to fit Japanese JMs?

ask him. he´s a member here. they screw patterns don´t match the japanese JMs, but you could always make some new holes...
