Musikraft doing jag necks again

Post by JVG » Sun Jul 01, 2018 4:16 am

Just a heads-up, I noticed that Musikraft has reinstated a few neck options which have been off the menu for the past 6 months or so. Among them is the 24" scale neck. They're also offering block inlays again, but unfortunately no binding - hopefully that will return soon as well.

I've been hanging out for this, as I've got a Mustang project that's been sitting idle waiting for a neck, and I'm a big fan of the MK stuff.

Cheers!
J

Yep, same here. Unfortunately they're not exporting rosewood - the cites thing must be too much hassle for them to bother with. They were doing it last year, so perhaps they will start up again.

I'm gonna ask if they can find me a nice dark Pau Ferro fretboard for a neck I'm planning. I've seen some PF that has a fairly similar colour to rosewood, although I guess t might have been stained.

Cheers

Pau Ferro darkens over time and ends up looking pretty similar to rosewood after a while...

People are freaking out right now, but in a few years all of those PF fretboards will look nice& dark. Nicer than a lot of the low-grade RW you find from greedy Chinese retailers these days, anyway.

I wonder what the Brazilian Walnut they've got on there looks like, I like the up-cycling idea.

That's good news. I've been waiting to order a neck from them for a Mustang project since January, so I'm glad they've finally added those back. Of course, I sent the body to be painted back in January, too, and I'm STILL waiting on that, so I hope it's done by the time I get the neck. This project sure has taken a lot longer than I thought it would when I started it. :squint:

I had questions about this too when I was ordering my JM neck. The impression I came up with through looking at photos of their stock necks was that the wood was more reddish and less figured than Indian Rosewood. My father-in-law happened to have a piece of Brazilian Walnut sitting around and showed it to me. It was surprisingly heavy for its size. I supposed this has to do with with its density and is why some refer to it as "ironwood". When tapped, it emitted a bell-like tone for what it's worth. Here's a stock photo of the stuff they're selling:

In the end, though, I thought that the Rosewood would look prettier, so I went with that. :D Here it is. I haven't oiled or anything yet. When I do, I imagine that it will be quite a bit darker.

I wouldn't order a Pau Ferro board now and hope that it darkens to look more like rosewood in my lifetime. I've got a Pau Ferro board that is close to 30 years old and it is the exact same color it was when it was new, and looks nothing like a Rosewood board. If it's darkened at all in the last 3 decades, the change is imperceptible.

I was excited to see this as well because I've been wanting to build a Jag. What bothers me is that on Musikraft's Jaguar/Mustang neck, veneer is not an option and neither are 50/50 side dots. These are the two things that have been holding me up; I want to build a vintage correct '64 Jag!

I noticed that too. Try giving them a call or an email to ask about it - they might do it for you. they're a decent bunch of people.

I just put a Musikraft neck on my Jag! I was pleasantly surprised how easy the experience was. Scott at Musikraft spent some time with me on the phone answering all my questions and going over tech specs to make sure everything would turn out right. They do offer binding, which I got cream. Maple neck, dark Indian Rosewood fretboard, medium jumbo frets. The neck bolted right on and played perfectly right out of the box. My only critique is that the cream binding is closer to brown than to off white. The feel and finish are top notch.

Very nice. The cream binding looks good - matches the pickup covers. What neck profile did you go for?

It's a medium C 83 92 neck. 1 11/16" at the nut and 9.5" radius. I'll post some new pics soon.
