Now I seriously want that a Jazzmaster with your exact shade of esoteric CAR!
Seriously, though... I think most people use the typical silver metallic under the candy red. Sometimes you even see gold metallic under candy. I think I achieved this color by using a discontinued Duplicolor shade called Champagne Gold metallic.
The gold basecoat is the common ground of the few ones I like, yours speaks to me for that very reason: the gold hue that oozes underneath.
I also remember that some time ago, a fellow offsetter here posted a pic of a red compstang with some light but tasteful fading shifting from the vibrant red to bronze right up to the arm contour were the gold was showing thru: it was sublime.

Are you going for a light relic or ageing along the road? I want more of your sorcery! :w00t:

Relic-ing (have we turned a noun into a verb... is that spelled correctly??) is a matter of taste. I am not one to tell others what to do with their stuff, I just have never been into it. In my case, it has less to do with the emotional response I hear from many, and more about personal preference.

Same goes for anything... I tend to like trucks, and I tend to like them in earth-tones. Not an emotional reason... just what I like.

All that to say, I'll not be intentionally relic-ing the guitar. However, as it is a lacquer finish, and I figure it will age on its own, I'm not going to worry about normal wear and tear. The '66 Jazzmaster I inherited from my father definitely shows wear patterns from playing, and I have no intention of "fixing" that.

So, if I am lucky enough to play so much that I wear the paint off the guitar in some areas, I'll be proud of it and won't try to make it look new again.

As one who (silently, in his head) always tells others exactly what to do with their stuff - Sigh of relief. :D

Re the "relic-ing" (don't worry bro, if we're wrong at spelling, we'll call it a neologism :D ), I wasn't asking you to do it, it was just a mere finish-wise question about the eventual plan you might have had along the road :)
Of course it's your guitar and you're the only one you have to please. :)

Keep it going!

^'94 ? My dad had a '95 (in bright red.) What I remember most about that car is the shift lever was basically from the floor to the ceiling :D

LOL

The first one is an '89. The other is an '01, which I'm still driving. Can't buy a new one until they re-introduce a gold tone. And a step side. :D

Before I hit the Submit button on my reply, I actually thought I had probably read too deeply into the question. Was going to change the response to "oh, I'm just going to let it age naturally"... but I liked my deep, philosophical answer too much :D :D

Nice trucks! I had my 2001 F-150 in Arizona beige up until about 3 years ago... bought another 2001 F150 (in white), and just gave it to my son to customize as he wishes.

I missed the Arizona beige color so much that on my first guitar paint job, I chose that color. Duplicolor has rattle can "Perfect Match" series of paint that I used for that one:

Thanks. Those '01 F-150's are a good vintage.

I like the paint on this guitar. I've been looking for a good source of metallic paint. I'll check out Duplicolor. Thanks for that.

I painted my Telecaster 350z metallic orange Duplicolor - about twelve years ago and did a pretty amateur job at it. Def looks reliced now, checking/chips and all. Still love the color, was thinking I may re-do if I can find the color again.

My second guitar was a Telecaster... and I initially found the color I wanted in the "Perfect Match" series... I did a test spray that was awesome, then a couple days later ... splotchy paint all over the guitar. Ended up sanding back down and mixing green metallic an blue metallic "Paint Shop" series paints.

In retrospect, I believe I caused my own problem with the can... when I finished my test spray, I just sat the can down. Which, I now believe clogged the nozzle. If I do another rattle can basecoat color (I'll always use Paint Shop Primer and Clear), I'll make sure to not treat the can that way... I'll turn the can over and spray the paint out of the nozzle until only air comes out, then I'll also wipe the nozzle with thinner. Lesson learned...

Go to Autozone/O'Reilly/Advance etc... they have like 2 shelves full of these colors. Unbelievable selection!

Yeah, I learned early on to clear the nozzle, too. That's a lesson you don't need to get twice. ;D

The wait is over. I have sanded, polished, shielded and reassembled... since it has humbuckers, I initially skipped the shioelding step. Had to come back and do it. Jazzmasters in my house seem so suffer severely. Anyway, no skin off my nose, done it before, I'm sure I'll do it again. Easy mod, and without getting into other methods, I find copper tape to work just fine.

With regard to setup, I have adjusted the truss rod to .010" at the 8th fret with frets 1 and 21 depressed, set the string height, and stretched and tuned the strings. I still need to check intonation, but without checking it specifically, it doesn't sound off to me.

As much as I tried to cover the damage, since I didn't cover the entire body with a film of filler, many of the glue joints show. I am actually okay with that... they are basically this guitar's battle scars, and part of it's story. I am thrilled I was able to salvage the body. 50 or more years from now, I am hoping that a descendant of mine finds this thread (or maybe I'll print out a story and put it in the case) and sees those scars and the work I did and has as much of an appreciation for it as I do.
