Binding, then the roundover?
Has anyone ever seen someone do binding and then a roundover on a solid body guitar?
Would that look cool? Would you need a really thick binding and then maybe a specialty tool to scrape it after paint?
Just curious.

Re: Binding, then the roundover?
Are you talking binding at the top of the roundover or at the bottom? I bet at the bottom would look really cool, almost like the white decal strip on Danelectros.

I haven't seen it. It would have to be thick and tall binding, as the radius of the roundover would subtract directly from the height of your strip.
That is to say: If you used typical 1/4" or so tall binding and then put a modest 1/4" radius roundover on it, the binding would be completely removed...

Re: Binding, then the roundover?
One way to do it using standard binding would be to route a deeper rabbet. After doing the roundover, a larger portion of the top wood would be left exposed, which could look cool. If you wanted to have the binding going all the way into the flat area of the body top, you'd have to use pretty wide and thick binding (along with a big-ass rabbeting bit), which might be a pain to bend around the outline. Other than that I see no reason not to try it, it would probably look really good - giving the top of the guitar an inlaid feel.
If you can find strips of ABS that match the radius of your roundover bit, it's worth giving it a try! I'd use something smaller than 1/4" though - 1/8" or 3/16" would be a lot easier to fit inside or around tight curves.
There are curved scrapers out there, you can even make your own using an old saw blade and and angle grinder. Just make sure to use a slightly bigger radius than your roundover.

Looks like this builder, Walsh kinda does it. Just happened across this today on Insta. Actually looks like a carve maybe but similar to how I imagine the binding then roundover might look

That looks awesome! Body shape is definitely reminiscent of a Super-Sonic, and with the XII-style neck pickup, that's just amazing. I also never thought pink would go so well with a cleatcoated brown-ish translucent wood grain.DrQuasar wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2019 6:19 pmhttps://www.destroyallguitars.com/new-a ... -pink-doxa

I grabbed a screenshot so I could post a pic. I hope the shop and maker don't mind. I'm sure if someone buys it they won't.

Re: Binding, then the roundover?
that looks more like they put a pink/white 2-ply pickguard on the body before doing the roundover (and pickup routs)

According to the specs on Destroy All Guitars it's a carve top with a pinstripe.
You can kinda see it better on this example

I think Walsh [those two lovely pink/purple fiddles above] uses paint for that effect.

Re: Binding, then the roundover?
Yeah, with plastic binding, you'd have to super careful not to melt it with you roundover bit.
