The Iceman Commeth!

Post by HNB » Tue Aug 27, 2019 6:05 pm

Newest project idea. The waist looks offset sort of to me, so I figured I would put it here. I like the body shape of an Iceman, but I am not a TOM fan and I am a contour guy so this is my plan.

Iceman shape and dual humbuckers with controls in the same place as usual.

Add tummy cut and forearm contour.

Add Fender hardtail string through bridge.

Active pickups, but no need for a battery box since the control area from the back should have room for a 9v.

Repurpose an old Fernandes neck I had laying around.

I was looking around for a cheap Peavey neck since I like how they are more pointy then a Fender option and not finding anything I liked much. Then I remembered I had a Fernandes neck upstairs. It had been reshaped a little and drilled for modern tuners before I got it. I plugged up the extra tuner mounting holes with toothpicks and wood glue and then went to work sanding the finish off. I could have left it alone, but it had some dents and dings that bugged me so I figured I might as well sand it and give it a fresher start. Once I got to plain maple, it was ready to dye with StewMac amber dye. I will likely put some stain on it to darken it a bit more than it is, but it is looking pretty good so far.

Before dye.

Neat project! I remember loving the Iceman around the time that System Of A Down released Toxicity. I still like the shape, though I've outgrown it a little as far as actually wanting one myself. That said, I do like the look of Paul Gilbert's Fireman. Something about the Iceman upside-down is just awesome to me :D

I put some stain over the dye to give it a little more depth and character. :D

Rad! I love me an Iceman. I really like how the plan calls for a fender hard tail type of bridge yet includes the Paul Stanley model mirror bit! :D
This is an excellent rectangle

Awesome! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the look of the Iceman - one of my favourite shapes of all time.

Bring it on 😀

Your projects are insanely original and addictive to follow.
I love the Iceman and I can't wait to see how this one unfolds.

The neck looks great and the headstock shape fits like a glove. You've definitely got an eye for design.
Do you have a finish scheme in mind or you want to see the wooden body to get inspiration from?

I am thinking flat white or flat black with chrome hardware. I will probably go flat or satin black. I think it should look pretty sweet. :D

Slight change in plans. I love me some Peavey headstock shapes and I feel like it would fit this body shape better then the Fernandes so I am going to use the Fernandes neck on a strat project. I couldn't find a Peavey neck for sale and it was pissing me off. I didn't want to spend over $100 on a used Peavey neck but stuff wasn't looking good. Stupidly I figured out I could buy a Peavey guitar cheaper than just the neck so I ordered a used Peavey for $60 plus $25 shipping. I will use the neck and keep the body around in case I want to use it or sell it. Seemed dumb to pay more for a neck with no tuners when I could get a complete guitar for less. LOL

This is a great idea! Are you going to refinish the neck like you did the Fernandez one? That really came out spectacular!

I might. It sort of depends on how the neck is when it arrives. :D If it is dinged up and stuff, I just might. :D

Well, then. Let's hope for some dings. Not really, but that other finish came out amazing.
