New Bass Day.

Post by Drewbertca » Wed Sep 18, 2019 4:33 pm

No Progress Pics. But it's a "Cigar Box Bass VI". Well Until the cigar box folded...So I built my own - Poplar top and back Pine frame made from 2x2s I had kicking around.

Neck is from Pit Bull Guitars - Maple with "Engineered Rosewood" fretboard.

Tru Oil on the body, neck and fretboard. Approx 3 coats on the neck and 5 on the body. The pine/poplar was thirstier than the maple neck.

Fender Roadworn Vintage Tuners and strap buttons. Cheapo String Tree, Tailpiece and Bridge from Amazon.

A bunch of construction screws and a couple corner braces.

The "logo" on the headstock is a brand made by using a torch to heat a fish hook and dropped it on the headstock.

Overwound Rose Korona in the Bridge, Vintage Wound Rose Magic Dragon in the neck. 500k pots and a .022uf cap. Pickup switches are rated for a 3/4 HP motor. Shielded with Aluminum Duct tape and Aluminium Foil.

Labella Custom Bass VI Strings.

Very cool!
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

I bet it has an angular sound that's perfect for writing hooks in Colorado :jacked:

Really cool and simple, that's going to look very good on stage! How is the neck/body balance? I see you put physics on your side with that wide leather strap.

It plays well. The neck came with a good beefy profile similar to my Les Pauls so I didnt feel the need to shave it down. The true oil came out a little glossier than my experiments but still feels fast.

It sounds pretty good. I really like Rose Pickups.

As for balance.....there is a bit if neck dive. Rests perfectly horizontal with that strap. Might ass some mass inside the body cavity to help.

Took a lot longer to get the parts than to build it.

If people are wondering about the fish hook burnt into the headstock, it comes down to each member of our punk band having an alias. Mine is "Sid Fishes" because in the early days of the band I've bailed on a practice or two to go fishing....
