Custom Design Offset Build

Post by gishuk » Mon Oct 07, 2019 9:15 am

After building guitars that were existing body shapes I wanted to do something a bit different. After some time messing about in photoshop I came up with this. Admittedly this is very much evolution and not revolution, its essentially a downsized Jazzmaster, roughly the size of a Stratocaster body. But it will still take a JM tremolo system if wanted without looking weird, and is a nice size to be comfortable without body contours. So basically its a kind of JM/Strat/Mustang hybrid

Making a template. I got a spindle sander machine for a good price on an ebay deal. It can also mount a belt sander. Wish i had bought one of these years ago!

Rough cut and sanded body ready to rout. Its a two piece Korina body, quite light and pretty grain.

Image

Trimmed body with pickguard design.

Image

With the Tele I've almost finished building, didn't do a build thread for that one but its also a Korina body, with tort binding. All the tort!

Image

Cavities routed out. Going two humbuckers on this one but the body shape fits JM pickups too, or 3 single coils with a different pickguard design.

Image

Using a Allparts Strat neck on this.

This is where it gets wild! I wanted to try dying Korina bright colours. I've never seen this done before but it worked pretty well. The wood is so light colour that they look almost as vibrant as on maple. However the grain never wants to stop raising, its frankly a bit of a pain in the ass to work around that, but possible.

Tru Oil over the top for the finish. Didn't grain fill, I'm digging the open grain look.

Image

Matching headstock because why not. That came out better than I thought it might. Made a logo and decals too. The cat is Gus, my big ginger Manx lad ;D

And heres where things have got to now.

It still needs the nut fitting, the wiring doing and a few bits and pieces sorting like pickguard mounting and strap buttons.

Hoping to at some point sell some variation of this design, never built a guitar for anyone else and thats kinda the goal at some point, pretty happy with how this looks, even if its not a revolutionary new shape!

The pickups are PRS 85/15s that I put in some funky covers and the bridge is a pretty cool multi adjustable roller Schaller thing, going for a bit of an 80s shredder vibe on this.

Cool design! Looks great with that purple/blue dye burst. I like the open grain look, too.

Been a bit of a break from working on this with busyness and some poor health but its basically done. Change of plans on the pickups after a few issues with the PRS ones its now sporting some 70s vintage Dimarzio super distortion humbuckers, facebook marketplace bargain on those!

Its all wired up and playable, needs more work on the setup but right from the off it really isn't too far away. Its got plenty of little imperfections, most that probably wont be noticeable to anyone but me (standard perfectionist times!) but I'm happy with it overall.

When its all setup and the weather isnt horrific I'll get some proper photos and maybe do a little playing demo.

Thanks guys ;D

I've got it all setup now and its pretty great. The shape is very balanced and feels comfortable even without any contours, but as its really not much bigger than a Mustang thats not too surprising.

It really nails that 80s rock tone, these pickups aren't the most subtle but do sound good and actually put out a nice clean tone too. I used 250k pots though which probably smoothed them off a bit took some of the brightness away.

If it ever stops raining here (which may not be for a while, woohoo Devon life :fp: ) I'll take some proper photos in natural light.
