squier cv jazz -> jazzmaster xii.. done(for now)! pics :)
continued from another thread in new, reissue - bought a whole cv jazz before realizing the only bits i really wanted were the body and the pickguard, but so it goes! at least i have a playable guitar in the meantime. i know it isn’t the most cost-efficient way to go about this but it’s a joy of mine to tinker.
started with a stock cv in sonic blue, kind of an awful guitar right out the box but with some work and a setup played and sounded pretty alright. removed most of the poly before giving up and slapping a finish on. a decent quality mustang bridge i don’t recall the origin of, and shimmed the neck(possibly a little farther than i should but it’s playing sooo nicely now).
on the way is a classic lacquer jazzy neck from fender, and very soon new pickups/electronics and a better trem. haven’t quite decided on pups, likely either pure vintage or v-mod... anyone tried v-mod in the bridge and vintage in the neck?
also undecided on whether to go with a matching headstock...
for now, here it is!!
EDIT
after some time, what i believe will be the(mostly) final iteration of the guitar:

Re: squier cv jazz -> jazzmaster xii
in her current form - another set of klusons on the way for the other 6 strings. added an avri trem and a coronado xii neck! 62avri jm pickups came in as well, will install when i get down to shielding and re-wiring. not sure what the end plan is here, probably a nine stringer? toying with ideas involving a half hardtail, half trem sort of thing for some funky chorusing.
pardon the goofy string splay at the headstock! as is, this is quickly shaping up to be a really fantastic instrument... absolutely in love with how it feels. this neck is dreamy, extra wide at the nut.. might have to put together another one of these once this one is done

Re: squier cv jazz -> jazzmaster xii
so what's the plan for the bridge once you get more than 6 strings on it?

jag bridge! might have to modify the saddles a bit, but i’m hoping that between heavy string gauges and the threaded jag saddles, it might work out well as is.Singlebladepickup wrote: ↑Sat Feb 22, 2020 10:35 amso what's the plan for the bridge once you get more than 6 strings on it?
the hardtail bit will be a jag bridge that i pulled the legs off of, the holes for the saddle screws just happen to work well as the hardtail mount, and if i screw it down between the bridge and trem the break angle is good too!
at least in theory...

Re: squier cv jazz -> jazzmaster xii
ideally at some point i’ll track down a coronado xii bridge!

i’m in love!! it sounds fantastic, the chorusing with the trem set up this way is unlike anything i’ve ever heard.
was impatient and cheap in the process so there are a few things that could have been done better but i wanted to give the idea a shot before really diving in deep.. the ideas worked out though! may have to put together another...

From the picture it looks like all the strings are going across the mustang saddles and then half go to trem and the others go to the Jag bridge that's screwed down as a makeshift stop bar.

jaguar saddles(making use of the threads) but yes, exactly. the lower octaves are hardtail, upper octaves to the trem. just pulled the legs off a jag bridge for the tailpiece, so string spacing is correct. (granted, i could have put it on straight at least )Singlebladepickup wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2020 8:03 amFrom the picture it looks like all the strings are going across the mustang saddles and then half go to trem and the others go to the Jag bridge that's screwed down as a makeshift stop bar.
only plans going forward are a white guard and witch hats(figure i’ll match the ~67 aesthetic of the neck) and possibly a xii pickup in the middle position, to access a bit of the classic fender twelve sound.

I'm assuming you already tried sticking 2 strings through each hole in the trem? Was it too much tension using the trem or were there tuning issues?postchrist wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2020 8:56 amjaguar saddles(making use of the threads) but yes, exactly. the lower octaves are hardtail, upper octaves to the trem. just pulled the legs off a jag bridge for the tailpiece, so string spacing is correct. haven’t tried that yet! the whole basis of this build was to try out the natural chorusing effect of only running half the strings to the trem - and it’s pretty cool! thing gets wild with a fuzz on.
gonna try a few ideas, will likely go through a lot of strings in the process! next is gonna be lower octaves to the trem, then maybe as a nine string for a bit. will be a fun recording tool!

threw on a white guard, witch hats, the rhythm circuit gave out so i taped it up. works great for its intended purposes currently. looks like shit but i’m having a lot of fun.
