Squier CV Jag refinish
I bought a Squier Classic Vibe Jaguar with in Sunburst with the intention to refinish it
Original NGD thread : http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/vie ... 6&t=114973
Guitar :
Roughed it up with 120 grit - then 180 grit and 240 grit :
Sprayed primer :
Scuffed that up with 400 and 600 grit and then sprayed colour :
Assembled the whole thing yesterday :
that Tortoise and that blue look great in sunlight :

In the middle of my own Jag refinish right now, if mine turns out half as good as yours I'll be very happy, it looks awesome! Such a nice setup for painting too.

Hands down the best looking color to go with a dark red tort. Great work! I feel like my JM just got a sibling.

You didn't use clear? That metallic came out really great then!
I like the shade of blue you picked.

I know I'm bumping an OOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLDDDDDDD thread, but I was wondering how the finish is holding up after the past few years. I'm asking because I'm about to do the same to my daughter's Squier Mini Strat (and possibly a Jazzmaster body for myself). I've applied paint straight to the wood but never over another finish.

The guitar/finish looks exactly the same as 3 years ago - I just changed the pickguard to white for now :GilmourD wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2023 1:50 pmI know I'm bumping an OOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLDDDDDDD thread, but I was wondering how the finish is holding up after the past few years. The Duplicolor I use is Acrylic and is very sturdy and durable
Using the existing Squier/Fender Poly finish as a base is normally not a problem - I have finished 20+ guitars like that and never ever had a problem with Acrylic ( Primer + Metallic + 2K Clear ) over Polyurethane
Incompatibility issues often come from spraying anything but Nitro over Nitro and I often read about Enamel being unpredictable... and of course if the underlying finish has not cured properly

I used 2K Clear over the metallic - didn't have any pics of that and forgot to mention that !Steadyriot. wrote: ↑Fri Jul 24, 2020 12:42 pmYou didn't use clear? That metallic came out really great then!

This one :
Normally I spray 2 coats of metallic and after 30-45 mins the clear over it (just like recommended on the back of the Duplicolor can)

Niiiiiice! OK, this gives me hope that I won't totally mess this up. I've been using Duplicolor for years (partially because my brother used to manage an AutoZone and I could get it with his discount years ago).NICQ wrote: ↑Thu May 04, 2023 7:20 amThe guitar/finish looks exactly the same as 3 years ago - I just changed the pickguard to white for now :

My usual problem is impatience... I go into things like this saying "I know this will take a while to do correctly" and then I'm putting the guitar together the next day. LOL
I think the Squier Mini will be easier since it has a factory finish on it that I'm just going to scuff and paint over. With the Jazzmaster body I'm getting I think I'm going to need to be more patient and let a properly applied sanding sealer coat cure before hitting it with primer, color, and clear.
Oh, and thanks for replying to me digging up your old thread.

Re: Squier CV Jag refinish
That CV Jag had a pretty nice looking sunburst but I love the refinish! Is that Wedgewood Blue?
edit: I just revisited the original thread and realized that I had asked the same question and you replied that in Austria, Duplicolor only has color codes instead of names - duh!
Regardless, that is a terrific looking CV Jag. Thanks for sharing with us again!

AUSTRIA! That's why the cans look different than they do here! I was wondering where that '70s kid show logo came from.jdr1014 wrote: ↑Fri May 05, 2023 3:08 amThat CV Jag had a pretty nice looking sunburst but I love the refinish! Is that Wedgewood Blue?
