Re: Finally, Another Yamaha SG-2 Build
Pretty much done except for final sanding.
As mentioned previously, this will get a metallic purple finish. I haven't picked an exact shade yet.
Maybe Firemist Purple?

Re: Finally, Another Yamaha SG-2 Build
Here's a pic from copaceticcustoms of the in progress Plum Crazy Purple finish. I have sprayed the headstock in black. It'll match the pickguard that way, and should look pretty cool. Also, I'm planning to put a Mastery MV vibrato on here, since that will look more like a Yamaha unit.

Re: Finally, Another Yamaha SG-2 Build
Coming along nicely. Just re-reading your thread and noticed you were looking for two vibrato arms. You still looking? You may have seen that I now make SG2/3 and SA50 vibrato arms and collets.

Re: Finally, Another Yamaha SG-2 Build
I'm definitely still in need of one arm for my red one. I sold the other vibrato to someone restoring a SG7 (or 5a? or 2a?).

Re: Finally, Another Yamaha SG-2 Build
Decal is on now.
I'm calling this Mars-2, but used the Russian spelling of Mapc for the decal. The name is in reference to the Soviet Mars-2 probe. The Mars 2 and 3 probes were the first man-made objects to reach the surface of Mars. My SG-2 based builds will be Mars-2, and if I make SG-3 builds, those will be Mars-3.
It's time to come out and say that the model names I'm planning to use for everything going forward (Mercury, Artemis, Apollo, etc.), aren't actually references to mythology, at least not directly. The names are from space exploration. Actual vehicles, rockets, satellites, probes, etc.. Science facts rather than religious fictions.

That shade of purple is amazing, and I like the idea of a black headstock and guard. Yamaha did black headstocks on the sunburst models, and it always surprised me that Fender never did the same. Painted headstocks always look right on Offsets to me.

Re: Finally, Another Yamaha SG-2 Build
The finished body is back from Copaceticcustoms! I still need to level the frets and make the string guide, but the wiring is already done. I'm really happy with how the Mastery Vibrato works with the Yamaha pickguard. The matching mastery bridge will make it closer to the feel of the Yamaha's rolling bridge.

Re: Finally, Another Yamaha SG-2 Build
The purple and black with just a little bit of chrome is just dead sexy. And like you said, the way the curve of the OEM shape vibrato follows the pickguard is just *chefs kiss*

Re: Finally, Another Yamaha SG-2 Build
Thanks so much everybody!
I started working on the string guide (nut), using a chunk of aluminum that I had included on a recent order with McMaster-Carr, but looking at the details of the particular alloy I chose (2024), makes me think that I need to start over with a different alloy. The one I have doesn't polish well apparently, and tarnishes quickly. I didn't think too much about those details when I was ordering, so I'm out $3 now. I'll try and find a more suitable material and start that bit over.

Re: Finally, Another Yamaha SG-2 Build
Been dragging my feet until the end on this one, just as promised in the opening post. I have the string guide made from 6061 alumin(i)um. I went to install the tuners, and realized the ones I had wouldn't work. I probably could have checked that a month or two ago. New ones are on order. I do still need to make or purchase an appropriate headstock string retainer.

Picking knobs that fit an aesthetic is such an underrated thing. This is getting better every update

All the little details falling into place! Well thought out and will be worth the wait. I'm a fan of those pickups, will be interested to know how you find them.
