I like the big headstocks too. I just had a spaghetti logo, so I wanted to make it the smaller, earlier size. A spaghetti logo on the big headstock would have bothered me too much...

I'm real happy with the neck. It strung up perfect and has a great feel. I just rounded the shoulders some and that's about it. I didn't level the frets or anything (don't have all the tools yet

), but it doesn't seem to need it at all. I'm sure it couldn't hurt, but just strung up right out of the box, it is really playable. I think you will like it.

The gold guard on sunburst is really growing on me, so I'm thinking the partsmaster might end up with my 1965 tort guard.....

I can't wait to get the body here to see how it looks!

Yeah, that's a tough decision for sure. The gold guard would look really nice on the blonde body I think, but it sure does look good on the burst too. I don't think you could go wrong either way actually

A quick update on this...

I haven't received the body yet (USPS apparently slows down a lot during the holidays), but I got the neck..

But most importantly, I have decided that my sunburst JM will remain my main guitar, so this is the one that deserved to be fitted with the vintage 1959-60 electronics and the gold guard. The blond partsmaster project will receive the CIJ electronics with better pickups and the 1965 tortoise guard.

So I decided to install the vintage electronics. I had a couple of dilemmas because a CIJ has no brass shield plates and I wanted to make sure I grounded the pickups and all properly without creating a loop. I also did not want to add any unclean solders to vintage 1959 pots and switches. So I used 3 different wiring diagrams I found on the internet, and adapted them to my situation, and the results are this:

The final test was to plug it in, and it works and sounds great! I am surprised at how fuller and darker the guitar now sounds! I love it!

hey guys,
so i have found two sources of repro gold aluminium guards for my 1960 rebuild. i think i am going to go for it. i already have a can or two of nitro from reranch- clear and sonic blue. does sonic strike you as a strange colour with the gold guard? as i understand, 'custom colours' were indeed that before 1960, so any colour will do. i was always attracted to mint green guard on sonic blue, but if i get this gold guard.... ideas?? olympic would be awesome too.....

IMO, go for Olympic white with the gold guard... I think sonic blue would be a bit strange.

There's a chart here on provide.net which shows when the Fender custom colours were offered, plus what car colour they were and when that was available as well.

I think you're right that prior to a certain date (1960 according to the above) a custom colour was just a matter of the customer asking for a certain colour and Fender would sort it out for them, presumably from whatever car paints were handy. As you can see from the link, sonic blue was available on Cadillacs from 1956 so Fender would have been able to use it if someone had wanted it.

While not the most common combination, I think Sonic blue and a gold guard would look great. It would have to be without a matching headstock though

To me, a matched headstock just doesn't look right with a gold guard. That's just my opinion though. If I were you, I would go with which ever color you like the most.

Stop it, I've already decided that my newest gold guard project will be refinished black. I'm just going to put my hands over my eyes until you go away and take all your fancy custom colour pics with you.
