XII Inspired Baritone Project
My goal is an XII inspired 12-string baritone. I'm planning on a USACG body and neck (hopefully Fender style hockey stick). I've been collecting parts and now have enough to do some really rough layout work.
The trickiest part so far has been the bridge. The real Fender XII bridge is just too scarce, and the routing looks tricky. I've got a Dano 12 bridge, but after seeing it in person it is too small and the corners are too sharp. There is a photo elsewhere on the site with an XII with this bridge (must be aftermarket body).
I've also got a clone T-O-M bridge with slots for 12 strings, but intonation is only adjustable by the pair. I'm thinking I could get some saddles made that were pre-compensated, sort of like you might see on an acoustic 12-string. I could also use a Jaguar bridge since the strings could be spaced on the threads of the saddles, or get some saddles made. And I've got a Ric 12 saddle bridge that never made it onto my 360 (it actually intonates pretty well as is).
Here's some layout ideas.
With it's future siblings:
My preferred bridge option 1:
This is my first choice for the bridge setup.
It will be a T-O-M 12-string as shown or a Jaguar bridge
with a Musicmaster bridge plate for the tailpiece. I
like this option as it looks close to the original XII
but requires no routing. Sort of what Fender might have
put together with parts laying around the shop.
Bridge option 2:
The is another option for the XII bridge.
I'd have to drill out the Musicmaster bridge
plate so it would go around the mounting studs
for the T-O-M or Jaguar bridge.
Bridge option 3:
Yet another option for my XII bridge. This one
moves the Musicmaster bridge plate back, kind of
filling the void where the floating tremolo
usually goes.

I'd be very interested in opinions.

I think this layout looks the cleanest (and closest to a stock XII).DB wrote:

Very cool project. You'd be hip with any of the options, but I prefer three - you may get a bit of chime from the behind the bridge string bits. Always nice.
By the way, how do you like the Jaguar bass? I've come real close to pulling the trigger on one of those from Ishibashi.

Wow, it does look a lot like your Jag. I was wondering about the pickguard between the bridge and control plate, but it does look good on yours.fullerplast wrote: I like Option 2. It looks alot like my hardtail Jaguar:

Yeah, the chiming and droning effects of the strings behind the bridge is why I considered option 3.jetset wrote: .. I prefer three - you may get a bit of chime from the behind the bridge string bits. Always nice.

I love my Jag bass, but you can get it in red with matching headstock like mine or black with regular headstock in the US for $699 with gig bag, probably less if you negotiate with a local shop. In Japan there is a sunburst model available which looks really cool but is not imported to the US. I also know that Fender has been cracking down on the Japan shops selling outside their market. Guitar-Japan has a note on their site that they can no longer sell Fender product outside Japan.

Re: XII Inspired Baritone Project
It does get kind of boring if you just play low register stuff. But if you try different chord voicings, or the same notes higher up the fingerboard, the character can be quite cool. Robert Smith of the Cure is a huge fan of the Bass VI, but a lot of the stuff he does is north of the 12th fret - these are the same notes you could play on a regular guitar but the sound is quite different on the longer scale length instruments.sonicblue64 wrote: i just cant get into the baritone sound, but cool
As far as playing everything in B a fourth lower than guitar, I agree - that sound gets tired pretty quickly.
