Jazzmaster Pups

Post by Abadacus » Wed Jan 31, 2007 8:38 pm

What kind of pickups would be best for my Warmoth Jazzmaster?
I play all kinds of music, mostly rock, particularly trending towards indie/post-rock stuff.

The guitar has an alder body, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard.

My gear: Guitar (as yet unfinished) -> Cusack Screamer -> BBE Sonic Maximiser -> 1976 Fender Bassman 10

Any suggestions?

Lollars, Novaks or Seymour Duncan Antiquities seem to be the best choices for vintage sounding pups...

have a look on their sites...they offer different ones...some vintage sounding, some with hotter output.

Novak pups come as P90s, and even PAF-style humbuckers....still in a Jazzmaster pup shape though....

Do the antiquity II's actually sound any better than the standard vintage pups or is that just hype?

they are good, I have used them for years. the AVRI pickups are good to, if I were going to spend the money I would go with Novak or Lolars so I could get them custom wound to my spec.

Another option - haven't heard anything about these, though.

As far as Antiquity II's go, they are nice, although a bit harsh to my ears. (could be the basswood body of my JM though), but the AVRI Fender pups are very nice in an Alder body JM.
I had a CIJ Jag with Curtis Novak's and this was an absolute stunning guitar. So I guess he's JM pups must be great as well.

Also a good idea would be to mix a set of SD Antiquity I and II. A "I" neck with a "II" bridge. I think someone here has that combination, which he absolutelly loves)

As far as i know a Basswood guitar is actually warmer than alder and would in fact be less harsh ,so maybe the antiquities are too harsh?

I like SD vintage, both jaguar and jazzmaster.

They're  cool pups. Neck : 7.75 k,Bridge : 8.4 k ,im gonna put 'em in the JZ i get next month fo sure! :)

Have a looksie
