You might be able to prise it apart slightly and get some strong wood glue into the crack? I'm no expert though so wait and see what everyone else says!

wood glue and a clamp, may be tuff to repair because it's right on the tuners.

I'm no pro luthier, but it seems to me that since the break goes through the tuner holes... it's going to need to be dowled so it will have strength under pressure.

To avoid drilling long holes for dowels all the way through it (which would be visible from the side), I would detach that piece entirely as clean as possible. Then drill into the piece from the broken side (not enough to go all the way through, obviously) and then drill into the headstock side. Drill both holes to a predetermined depth, which will be the length of the dowels. I would dowel in three places.  Glue the dowels into the headstock side, then spread glue on the broken area. Put some glue on the piece as well, and slide the broken piece over the dowels. Wipe up the excess glue and clamp it for a few days.

I hope I explained it adequately. If not, PM me. It's not as difficult as it sounds, and will probably be the only type of repair that will last. It shouldn't be much (if any) more noticeable than just attempting to glue it.... but will be ALOT stronger.

Good luck! We hope your friend gets better....

man, for future reference, a slight pry, and running some wood glue down in there, followed by a nice clamping for 48 hours would do the trick quite nicely.  A clean break like that is no problem, and itll be very strong once done.  proper glue coverage and clamping would eliminate the need for doweling and would be stronger than the original wood.

But 50 bucks isnt a bad deal at all, at least, thats what I'd charge someone to do it.  Plus, its less pain in the ass. Now you can spend that time just playing:)
