Re: A Bass VI for $200?
I just made a cheapo Bass VI out of my SX Jag bass copy. I bought a Dano Baritone neck for it (30" scale), and the rest of the parts I already had on hand.
I'm really happy with it!

It sounds pretty great! It doesn't have a neck pickup and the bridge pickup is very close to the bridge, but it doesn't sound far off from recordings of the Bass VI that I've heard.MatthewK wrote:Brilliant! How does it sound?
Now I just need a neck pickup and maybe some pickup surrounds to hide the gaps from the Jazz Bass pickup holes

Guess you've seen it before, but with it's latest update, A SD 'Lil 59 in the bridge.
For those ariving a bit later, DIY BAss VI body from African Maghonie with a reworked Squier Bronco Bass neck. Total price was 'round $ 200,- I guess.
Plays and sounds like the real thing.

That really is super hot - as if the VI had been popular right through the 70s and Fender had spruced it up to fit in with their 70s look.

Added a neck pickup and moved the bridge pickup north. Obviously the switch plate is just for looks, until I get around to routing for it. It's not perfect, but I did my best.

That's looks great! Did you have to reshape the neck pocket or the neck to get the dano neck to fit? I'd like to see a picture of the body and neck to see how it looks all togetherThe Dead Ranch Hands wrote:I just made a cheapo Bass VI out of my SX Jag bass copy. I thinking of doing something similar either with a dano neck, or modify a bronco bass neck, or modify the short scale Hofner 182 bass neck which I currently have.

Sorry to threadjack even further.. But is that the "baritone" Dano neck on Allparts.com or is it their Dano bass neck done up?

Re: A Bass VI for $200?
There's a gap in the neck picket because the dano neck is narrower than the original bass neck. The dano neck is supposedly a little wider than a Strat neck, so you'd have to do some modding to get it to fit something like a strat or an offset. I'll try to get a full pic later.Metispicker wrote:That's looks great! Did you have to reshape the neck pocket or the neck to get the dano neck to fit? I know of a really great thread on this very subject on another message board.
If it's cool, I'll be glad to post a link.

I've got a thread about it on shortscale.org, if that's what you mean! Otherwise it would be interesting to see.

The first Bass VI conversion is on page two. Things pick up again around page five.

Nice, and with the imprimatur of the mighty Albini no less (well, his studio anyway).
