the closeup looks nice...
i sprayed some tinted lacquer over it to make it look closer to being right

but i'm so disappointed that i didn't get any metallic flake...

mine's a '62 Jazz Bass Reissue from several years ago
I didn't get too much flake until I started polishing. Did you try spraying down on it? supposedly that helps catch the flake better

nah, there's absolutely zero flake in it

it doesn't even say "metallic" on the can...

I dunno... I'd think they gave you Teal Green Metallic instead... ??? Compare it to the TG Tele on Curtis Novak's site...

Just sprayed my second colour coat, this time spraying down on the body, looking really good and much easier to see the coverage and flake. Daylight certainly makes it easier to see problem areas!

Spraying down on to the guitar also seemed to make runs and overspray less likely (so far none) which i hear you really don't want with metallics...

Enough for one last thin colour coat left in the can i think

Final colour coat sprayed - the colour has darkened and deepened a little, this is good, it was quite bright before.

Annoyingly towards the end of the can when i was dusting on the final passes the aerosol started to splutter a little but i don't think it will be too noticeable... it was all going so well!

Waiting for initial clearcoats to be shot now

Looking good. I always toss the can when its getting to the bottom to avoid spitting.

I'd been waiting for the lacquer to harden for three weeks - I wasn't getting headaches when in my studio with the body anymore so thought it safe to get on with the wet sanding/buffing. With only four clearcoats (one can) on the body I was thinking about ordering another can and spraying it up again, but I'm back in my place in London and couldn't really do this without exploding/poisoning me and my neighbours and the weather's so shit outside that's no go too... So... cautiously proceeded with a light sanding with 1200 wet paper. Thought this would suffice as clear coat so thin. No problems - then buffed with Turtle Wax metallic - looks pretty cool I think. It's a super thin finish but that's what I wanted from the outset - not some poly-heavy monster... Few imperfections but I can live with them, it's probably going to get bashed up anyway and i want it to age naturally.

New (?!) 1963 vibrato to replace cij one i had, much better!

Ugly shielding :k

Ok so now I really want to get this guitar finished so I can play it!!!

I still have a problem with a small gap at the butt of the neck in the pocket which is preventing me from drilling holes for the bridge. I tentatively began sanding the neck pocket to fit in the neck which is slightly too wide (CIJ neck) but I'm really fucking paranoid i'll make the pocket too wide and end up with gaps all around the neck, not just at the one end. Anyone know any tricks for this? Don't want to, but I'm considering taking this to my local guitar guy in Hackney to get this sorted.

The gap is so small it probably makes no difference but I'm fussy!

May hit the wiring today, got to wait in for a sofa to be delivered... looks daunting... so many parts...

Now to find a supplier who can colour match from feathers!!

Yeah i did kind pf want the green to come out darker - that's how i'd envisioned it. One thing I will say is that it appears very different in different light. I'm liking it though, I grew up in Sherwood (Nottingham) so it's kind of a homage to that...in a way...

Re: Sherwood Green Jazzmaster project thread FINISHED!

Post by rexter » Mon Feb 22, 2010 10:01 am

Ok the guitar is pretty much done as of a few days ago. I'd been waiting for someone to sort the neck pocket out for me... Cheating... i know. I got everything wired up and put together. Needed to put in a shim as expected to get the action playable. I'm loving this guitar!! It plays great, intonates perefectly and sounds just as I hoped. I'm really pleased as I would have hated to waste all that time and money by creating an unplayable piece of shit...
Now i can sell my strat...

Pics not great as from my phone - and yeah I'm missing the high e string... that was a casualty of setting the trem tension this morning. And some pickup screws to put in - need another shim under the bridge pickup i think but it's perfectly playable at the moment.

The vintage 1963 trem is very sticky for want of a better word so i'll be posting a question about this in the tech section after i've read up some stuff.

finish isn't perfect but not bad for my first i think. Might refin in the summer as I know where i went wrong now...

Thanks man, I love IBM and yeah, generally all the metallic custom colours!

I'm already plotting a build of a Musicmaster/Mustang style guitar with Bigsby in BMM... got the bug for certain...
