Bigsby Duosonic/Musicmaster mongrel

Post by rexter » Tue Apr 20, 2010 6:31 am

This was once my 90s Mexican Duosonic reissue, my main guitar for years until i got a 'proper' guitar about 4 years ago. It was trashed, i'd tried to mutilate the finish and the strap was attached by long nails driven into the body and mounds of tape... Anyway the guitar geek bug hit me and i decided to fix it up.
1978 musicmaster neck, Bigsby B50, Schaller STM bridge, lipstick pickup in the bridge and a Fender CS 69 in the neck. Originally i had SD antiquity IIs in the guitar and the sounded amazing - I'm keeping them for the future. I had to give this to my friend and former bandmate to settle a bad debt but I still get to play it now and again!!

I'm planning to build one of these using sterordinary's Mustang templates as the basis once i get some cash. It would be Burgundy Mist, same otherwise with my antiquities in it.

I had to shim the neck a bit for use with the Bigsby and the Schaller but i can't recommend a Bigsby enough!!!

Just having that big chunk of metal on the guitar seems to add a lot of depth to the sound and I love the action on them, moreso that the traditional Mustang trem although that's one of my favourites... oh and those 70s Musicmaster necks are beautiful too.

Sorry the pictures are a bit shitty, thought this might interest a few people maybe

I love it!
I could also see a humbucker or p90 in the bridge if you feel like getting crazy with a router!

Thats great.

I've been wanting to do something similar with a first gen (56-63) Duo body and 70s 24" neck. I envision LPB with parchment guard and stock (fixed) tail.

Very cool - I'm thinking I may do this to mine.

How do you determine how far back to place the Bigsby?

I like the idea of the vintage neck - but these new necks are so nice to play.

Hey, I actually think I put the Bigsby way too far back on this one. If i did it again I would have it much closer to the bridge for more break angle. I t worked fine but looked weird. Guitar actually exists in a very different guise now with a maple strat neck and vintage Musicmaster bridge!

Here's a shot of my '56 Musicmaster Bridge with callaham compensated bridge saddles - they had to be trimmed left and right to fit the Musicmaster - they are made for a Tele.

Nice pics. I like to mount a Bigsby as close as possible to the bridge for break angle (watching that it isn't too close to work right). A little distance doesn't hurt it if it works fine. After all, how it sounds is the main concern.

What I like about these aliexpress knock-offs is that they provide all sorts of good looking type of guitars with one common trait: the total bravery into deliver the your face "fuck it, that'll do ya, mate" :D
Looking at this specimen it seems that while one guy was about assembly the guitar before the crack of the dawn of a tired monday, he realises that the pickguard is missing and his fellow mate came to the rescue cutting a fresh new one just eye-balling it while staring at the body from afar.. then he hands it to his fellow "there you go, mate.. SCREW THIS. ....to the body." ;D

The switches slots went on in FULL DOHERTY mode too.

Nonetheless, I like ;D
