What's the song? Got a link to it on YouTube/iTunes/Amazon?
I loves me the sound of that 4001!

Thanks for the link, very interesting sound!

'Gato' Alquinta - Los Jaivas - 1970- The guitar was imported directly from Japan (to Chile) in 1968 along with a bunch of other stuff.

genius ! :wtf:

i've always wondered about accessing the trussrod from the rear on one of my set neckguitars but putting it under the neck plate like that is perfect.

looks like you're getting some fine plans there ben.
i miss my old yamaha ( one of the 'banana' models in orange .. wonderful neck )

re - shapeways - i just can't decide on anything that i'd need made up other than thicker steel plates which are best done with laser/water cutting ... maybe some truss rod covers with some kind of interesting edge profile ...

great thread, beautiful guitar.

Hi Ben, Glad to see you have this project underway. I totaly agree with what Harvesters said, I was knocked out as much as you were, I think, to see this photo. A very elegant solution I have not seen before. Love what you are doing with the pickups & Trem. Was so impressed with Peter Leonards work I have just bought some '52 Tele pickups from him for an Ash BlondeTele, as couldnt quite nail the finish on Alder with the Jazzy build.
Good luck & hope you find the time to do this project the justice it deserves. 8)

I just got busy at RazorLAB. Even with a 20% valentines day discount it cost me an arm and a leg, but it'll be worth it. There's still a few things I haven't resolved yet - mainly the bridge and trem, but I figured I'd make a start anyway. I just missed out on a battered 12-string version on ebay, which would have been a great help, but not getting it made me more determined to get this properly underway.

20% discount for valentines day? So are you making this for your other half Ben? Or did you just go for the obligitory flowers, card and choco like the rest of us! Lol

Making it for the other half? I wasn't aware those kinds of wives existed in the real world...

Yes! I can hardly wait. This is probably in my top five OSG projects of all time already.

I threw the SG-2 guard on there just to fill up the space on the sheet, but I'm now thinking I might make both guitars at the same time...

It's not as accurate as the SG-3 guard since I only had some shoddy photographs to work from for the top curve, not PoppaPopp's lovingly produced tracing, and I don't have any cavity shots of an SG-2 so I'll be guessing with that, but I think I can get close enough.

Cool cool, I kind of suspected one of them was just there because it could be.

However you wind up doing it (both or just the SG-3), it's nice to see this thread active again.

Link Wray's Yamaha is part of my Holy Guitar Trinity:

Johnny Ramone's Mosrite
Link Wray's Yamaha
Joey Strummer's Telecaster

I am very excited to see the final product of this project!

Cheaper than building one, that's for sure!

That price sounds about right I think - I've seen ok condition ones on ebay (Australia) for just a litle more.
