hi all
the mustang bridge i bought has a much more severe curve
than the stock bridge on my new cij jm
the top and bottom string seem way too close compared to the rest
with the mustang bridge and just felt very odd
have i the wrong type bridge? the guitar and bridge were both bought from
ishibashi and are fender japan parts,
the stock bridge is okay so far (but its only over week old !! )
any steps I can take to preserve its performnce??

Re: Didnt like mustang bridge
A mustang bridge is the identical radius to what a Jaguars should be.Sounds like it wasn't set up right as the necks are the same radius and require a bridge of the same radius.
Just measure from the top of the fret at 17/19 or so to the bottom of the string,if its the same on every string its right. As for action....thats up to you and you personal preferences.
This is not a rule, just a good reference point to start making personal adjustments.

Re: Didnt like mustang bridge
There's a long thread full of bridge tips stickied at the top of the Tech section which you might find helpful.
The lack of adjustment in a Mustang bridge is one of the reasons I never tried them, but they should be the same radius as the fingerboard on your Jag anyway as Pumpkin says. Warmoth sell a Mustang bridge with the outer four saddles adjustable, so you set the bridge base height to be correct for the middle two saddles and then adjust the outside ones. Or you can get Graphtech saddles that are like Mustang saddles with a saddle groove, but with grub screws for height like JM/Jag saddles - they will just fit into the bridge base you already have.
(BTW Pumpkin .. this new avatar of yours is cool! )

Re: Didnt like mustang bridge
hi all
thanks for the feedback
perhaps it just didnt suit me, I'ms sure the mustang one is correctly
made to suit the jazz, it just felt wrong
the radius on the jazz is way more severe that the guitars I am used to
one has a 16" rad and the others have 12" rads, the JM being 7.5"
I suppose i could always just prop something under the two e saddles
on the mustang bridge to higher them a little
I might pop the mustang one back in a nd take a snap for you guys
to see what you think,
i will measure the actions and see what the crack is

Re: Didnt like mustang bridge
if you really feel the mustang bridge is useless to you in the current state, and you want a more stable and permanent fix, you could do what i did; i filed down the bottoms of the four middle saddles to get a straighter curve. i took away quite a lot from the two middle ones and a bit less from the A and B ones.fourmations wrote: I suppose i could always just prop something under the two e saddles

i´ve always liked having higher action on the outer strings. it makes bends easier on the high E and allows me to hit the low E harder without having a lot of buzz.

Re: Didnt like mustang bridge
You can download a radius gauge here. http://www.kinman.com/html/toneWorkshop/radius.htm It's all the way at the bottom, in several different formats. I have bought TOM bridges that had the proper radius for a Jazzmaster, and I have a mustang bridge that was a straight line except for the E saddles, so it's always good to check.
Why should we buy postage stamps? We can make our own.
