After a week of applying tru oil, I scrubbed the body down with synthetic steel wool to knock the shine off. Then I gave it a vigorous buffing with an old Sonic Youth t-shirt, mostly to give it a nice luster, but if there's some kind of mojo transfer, that would be cool too.

I already had the pickguard wired up, so only had to solder the bridge claw. The nut was already made, the neck was ready to go. I was able to get the whole thing assembled in less than an hour. The only thing left is the setup.

Yeah . . .

not entirely sure about the sliding switches . . . but really like the overall look.
When thinking about any advice given always ask yourself "why would (s)he know more than I do".

Testing, testing, 1, 2, 3. Never do fully trust plans I find online. Always best to test the plans (and your paths) in some foam insulation before anything more pricey!

This is what I find frustrating about offsets, the variability! I used the plans off of that guitar plans collection site... there’s 4 there and except for one super-vintage version they all seem to agree. But sure enough my test cuts do not match the ‘US’ pickguard I bought off eBay to test with... specifically the PG screw placements and the distance of the thimbles from the neck pocket.
Frustrating,

This, erm, thing just left my workbench.

I needed a bit of fretless bass and sitar sounds for a gig and a couple of recording sessions. I decided to put the two together in one instrument. The body/neck is a leftover piece of walnut I rescued from the bin at work. Beautiful, but oddly shaped and cracked in places. I filled up the cracks with epoxy, gave it rough shape on the belt sander and gave it a 12" radius. The pickup is the infamous doom-Charlie-Christian p90 I made a while back, I figured a rail would work better than individual pole pieces with just two strings. One is a bass A string, the other a guitar D string. I gave the bridge slot of the guitar string a shallow slope at the front so it would buzz nicely. The nut, bridge and tailpiece are bits of aluminium I had in my drawer. The volume pot and jack output had to be put into a separate piece of mahogany I attached to the bottom.

It's not exactly a fine piece of lutherie but I needed something quick (a bit less than a day's work) and it does the job. :-[ It's oddly usable and I might re-use it on different projects.

Today, I received some prototype 3d prints of a special strat pickup cover.

Image

I'm going to test out using strat pickups as a faux WRHB.
I had some extra plastic bobbin pickups from an early 2000s MIM strat, I'm using the neck/middle for my test. With the plastic bobbins I'm comfortable with adjusting the pole pieces as seen below, without disturbing the coil (I've done this many times without damage, but do it at your own risk).
Image

I'll be wiring them up as a humbucker, with a series/parallel switch, just to do a quick test. This will have to wait until I have a guitar opened up for mods though - sometime in the next few months. If this sounds good, I thought it could be a cool option for the neck position of a tele, or a mustang bridge (I have an angled version as well).

Pear, that is fantastic!! Gives me such ideas for different projects that I don't even have planned. Haha.

More woodshop-type organization! I built an A-frame-shaped lumber cart. Sheet good storage on one side, and boards and other storage on the other. The PVC tubes on top are for dowel or thin cut-offs. All on casters as well. Aww yeah.
