Re: 1 meg vs 500k for tone pots
In the US and Europe you may have more choices. Here in Australia suppliers are few and far between as well as being overpriced so I now use Stewart MacDonald. I have tried eBay but most sell rubbish made in China that are rejects that dont make the grade for sending to USA http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics ... eters.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; .
These guys also have http://www.lmii.com/products/mostly-not ... dware/pots" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
If I use eBay sellers I only now buy from USA or UK based.
Just be aware that the ALPHA type have 18 splines and the CTS are 24 spline. So either pick the same spline type or get knobs to match.

CTS is a popular choice.

Yeah. I've had a ton of guitars with different pot combos. My current main JM has a 500k volume and tone CTS pots. Sometimes it even feels like its too bright. I play out of a very bright vox style amp, with a celestion blue.
I've also had a JM with 250k volume and 1 meg tone. Sounded great! Sometimes i felt like it lacked a little edge. But still sounded great.
I've also had 500k volume and 250k tone. Sounded amazing as well.
For me the dual 1meg pots are just too bright with Lollar or Pickup Wiz pickups (my prefered pickups) For some reason though the stock AVRI pickups sound find with 1 meg pots. But when I put lollars in, it was just too bright for me. I'd have to roll off the volume a bit.

Re: 1 meg vs 500k for tone pots
I've since bumped my pot values to 500k in my Tele and in my Jazzmaster (before selling it) and 250k in my Duo Sonic. I also have a treble bleed circuit on all Volume pots as well... Might change the tone a little on full open. I'm building a guitar now with two Jazzmaster pickups constructed like p-90's with independent volume knobs for each at 500K and treble bleed for each with no tone controls... I hope it's not bright as hell! if it is I'll take out a volume and wire back in a tone knob leaving a master Vol and Tone only.
I finally finish building a guitar, go to play it, and then remember, "oh yeah, that's right. I suck at playing... Why did I build another guitar again?"

Yeah maybe Ill switch out one and use the 1M instead. Both 250k is just... just dull. The edge is gone, especially with the neck pickup. I may just buy a 1meg mini to replace the 50k in the rhythm circuit though just to bring the neck back.Bronco Billy wrote:I use 1M volume and 250k tonepot... it definitely doesn't suck!

Yeah. Both at 250k is probably way too dull. I did notice in my JM with the 250k volume and 1meg pot that the neck pickup was still not as bright as I'd like. But the bridge sounded perfect. 500k on both is kind of a nice balance of bright, but not too bright.Brock the Mod wrote:blake480 wrote:
