Reverse offset idea

Post by roscbarn » Thu Jul 14, 2011 6:59 pm

Guys, just sharing an idea of a "frakenstein" as my first build.

I was really impressed and inspired by Niksureal's "Nova" (Mosrite + Rickenbacker) and begin to tought more and more about it. If you are reading this Nik, thanks, your work is trully awesome.

Then I found the Motorave Lemans and the full idea really "clicked" on my mind:

The body being a mix betwwen the Motorave Lemans and the "Nova" (already a Mosrite + Rickenbacker in my head), with lipsticks (type "D" - Danelectro ones) or the GFS Brightons , with a neck with 25.5'' scale with blocks and an inverted Galanti headstock (like the Italia Imola). Single volume and tone and 2 slider switches.

The plan being: make the body at a CNC (cheating, I know) and order a cheapo neck with blocks (and the rest of the components).

The body color being Copper with a black pickguard (or a dark red anodized aluminum one).

I like matching headstocks, but, in this case, I think a black one fits better.

So here it is: a print screen of the .dxf files (just a general idea) I've been working. With 2 tremolo options, the Jazzmaster we all know and love and the Mustang (not very accurate, but you get the idea).

What do you think?

I dig it. You've actualy made the Lemans look better. The horns in particular look fantastic.

Love everything but the headstock - it looks off to me.

Play around with that a bit and you've got a total winner!

Cool!!!

May I come with a suggestion? If you're going to have a reverse offset, why don't you reverse the pickup slant too? Not only will it look better (IMHO at least) since it will harmonize with the body lines, it will also sound better (again IMHO) since the unwound strings will get a little extra fatness and the wound ones a little extra definition.

And since you have the available real estate go with the JM trem.

Agreed with all these points.

I prefer it with the mustang trem. It looks cleaner to me.

Not particularly feeling the headstock but I'm a bit of a purist & hate anything reversed or "wierd looking".
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

Wow, exciting :)
Reverse guitars are cool!
My opinion is that the Mustang trem looks cleaner.

Guys, thanks for the input and the criticism :D

The inverted headstock being the most controversial point...I looked the Italia Imola and don't looked off to me, and I really love the look of this inverted Galanti headstock (but maybe is the look together with a offset body).

But you gave something to think about it and when I go home I will play with the files a bit more.

Inverted slant pickups...hmmmm. Another thing to think.

Hey, Nik, thanks for watching. The intended neck is similar to the one you used in your SGV build.

Yes kikey, agreed, all power to the inverted offsets!

The Mustang vibrato in my mind is becoming more and more THE ONE to be used...

About the weirdness...It's the whole point :) Making something neither totally alien, neither a rebuild of a existing design (the middle path, you know?) ;D

Another thing to think...this body, being big, could be a nice platform to make a bass VI kind of thing.

Thanks again guys.

Just fooling around with Inkscape (never worked with vectors), messing with the pickups and the headstock.

Inverting both pickups, don't worked for me. But inverting the neck pickup and making the bridge PU straight works IMO (funniest thing, I already have 2 guitars exactly with this configuration...)

And messing around with the headstock just to see how it likes. A right P90 at the bridge and a inverted slanted brighton at the neck.

Guys, once again, I never worked seriously with a vector software, this is just to get a general idea :)

Be aware of the fact that the string spacing of a fender bridge is wider than that of a P-90 pickup... In my experience this makes the either of or both of the outer strings sound sort of dead....
