wood types / wierd project!

Post by fourmations » Wed Sep 05, 2007 5:13 am

hi all

i am making a travel guitar
I just want a really quiet thing that I can
diddle about on, practice scales on the beach, etc

so........

I am using an electric guitar bolt on neck
and literally attaching a plank with a bridge to it

I was wondering what wood i could use for this plank
bearing in mind I want to keep it light for travel,
whats a good light wood that will take the tension
I will string it with electric 10-46

i have access to decent tools here in work
and will route a neck pocket in the "body"
and put it together at my destination

afterthought... could i use aluminium?
light, rigid, mmm...

any advice welcome

Alder, Poplar, Pine or Ash would be my recommendations.

thanks for that stereo

another question...

on the neck in question the screws are splayed out..

(the neck plate does not match up with the neck holes at all!!)
but when its all together its perfect, the holes were drilled at an angle
from the back of the body into the neck

so, its going to be hard for me to drill my "body" to suit
as i cant really measure the angles

I think i can get it with a bit of thought.. but
if i were to mess up the existing holes in the neck
is it easy to fill them and redrill, what the product to use
(uk / european)

the neck will be going back on its proper body
when i'm back off my hols

this neck is off an old aria pro 2 335 copy which is not an amazing guitar
but i have had it for 15yrs and dont want to render it useless

Plugging and re-drilling holes is fairly straight-forward.  You can use virtually any wooden dowels and regular wood glue, after you drill the appropriate-sized hole.

maybe you could just plug the neck holes and then drill it to fit the neck plate... that way you won't have to try, plug, try again... etc.??

that's what i've done for 3-4 of my proj guitars in the past (changing 3 bolt strats to standard 4, etc)

:D

thanks for the wisdom guys

the minor dilemma is that I want this neck to go back on the guitar
so the holes are splayed on the body original body too.

so, i would need to plug the neck, drill out the travel body
and plugged neck at the same time, and the off on my hols

then plug the body and drill that in line with the holes
that were drilled for the travel body

whoah gotta post, my kids after the doodlebops website  ::)
