HELP!! DIY Johnny Marr Jaguar Wiring Problems!!

Post by RIORIO » Tue Mar 05, 2013 5:14 pm

Hello all!

My (very talented) luthier is running into a major roadblock while wiring my custom Johnny Marr Jaguar. To give you some background, the guitar started out as a stock VM Squier Jaguar and is using the stock pickups. This is what he communicated to me:

With the four-way switch on the Marr Jag, the pickup selections should be as follows:

Position 1) Bridge
Position 2) Bridge and Neck
Position 3) Neck
Position 4) Bridge and neck (series)

After MANY attempts, including contacting Fender for support, he is getting (with a four way switch):

Position 1) Both
Position 2) Both
Position 3) Neck
Position 4) Neck

For reference, he is using the stock Fender Johnny Marr Wiring Diagram. He also tried wiring it using another diagram provided by Gryphon stringed instruments with no luck. Does it have something to do with the pickups?

For the hell of it, he wired a 3 way selector and it functioned perfectly. He is stumped and so am I.

HELPPP!

This came with my four way telecaster switch. Did you use this diagram?

You said he tried a 3-way. Did he try a different 4-way?
Realistically though, we'll have to see it to really help you.

I don't know if you can do it with a three way diagram. It uses a four way switch to have the normal three positions with the series option in addition. I believe the Marr uses a four way switch as well.

I'll shoot some gut pictures tonight. My guitar tech said he tried just about every variation to no avail. He also contacted Fender customer support and many other luthiers for advice- also without success. He tried two different 4 way switches, also.

It SHOULD be fairly easy.

Lots of 4-way diagrams on google:

2 different ways:

guess I would prefer the one on the right.

Was there ever an answer to this? I have a Johnny marr jag. It worked as it should. Then I replaced the pickups and I have the same problem. I didn't change any of the wiring I swapped the hots for the hots and the ground for the ground and I am super confused. The only difference between the pickups is they are RW/RP unlike the bare knuckles. But I don't see how that would affect the wiring. Please let me know!

My understanding of the 4-way switch is that the shield or pickup cover on one of them has to be grounded independently? The claw goes to ground and the hot and cold get reversed for the series/parallel, right?

Yeah that sounds about right. I have been using the fender schematic at the following link. Note this is for the non-RW/RP Bare Knuckle pickups.

http://support.fender.com/service_diagr ... B_SISD.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I spoke with Jaime at the Creamery he made my RW/RP ALT' 88 Jag pickups he said the RW/RP will change affect the wiring, so I am waiting on his fix. But any other input would be greatly appreciated

Just kidding I figured it out. On the neck pick up the connection between claw and "cold" wire needed to be disconnected.

Er, yes, that's what I meant by independently, yeah. Not connected to each other.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but I'm having the exact issue that OP had. Can someone clarify what this fix means?

To confirm that the reason for your problem is the same, it would help if you confirmed that you are trying to wire pickups (which ones ?) according to the standard Marr circuit (ie 4-way switch, incl series) ?

If your problem is indeed the same need to isolate the claw ground from one pickup ...

You will notice in the Fender Marr wiring diagram that the neck pickup has an extra (green) wire coming from it, ie 3 wires instead of two.
https://www.fmicassets.com/Damroot/Orig ... B_SISD.pdf

Jag pickups, such as these PV65s, typically only have 2 wires, as the ground wire serves both as the ground side of the coil, and the grounding for the claw. This is achieved at the factory by the short silver wire linking the single ground wire (already linked to the coil ground side) across to the claw back ...
Image

For the Marr wiring, the neck pickup must have those two grounds separated. So you cut the silver wire, and solder a new ground wire to the claw side, equivalent to the green wire in the wiring diagram. That gets connected to any convenient grounded point.

The end result should look like the Vmod pickups on the Am Pro (that also has the 4-way with series) - the aftermarket ones are wired that way from the factory ...
