It'll sound better. IMO the metal guard sheilds the electronics better and allows for a warmer more compact sound. I can hear the difference compared to my tort guard JM which sounds a little brighter. (pickup resistance values and height are factors as well) I love them both. One isn't better sounding to my ears. If anything, because it looks so hot, it'll sound better, even if it's only in your mind.

I know I'm probably in an extreme minority here, but I don't really dig the gold guard look. I think sunburst looks best with a nice vintage tort gaurd. I'll admit the gold guard repro's are much nicer than the junky modern swirly fake tort guards, so this is definitely an improvement for this guitar.
Of couse my main guitar a metallic pink 66 Jazzmaster with a mother-of-toilet-seat guard, so who am I to judge aesthetics?

I really like the gold guard on this guitar... the burst looks more authentic as someone else noted. Very nice.

Thanks!Jay wrote: I really like the gold guard on this guitar... the burst looks more authentic as someone else noted. Very nice.
The different pieces of wood in the body sure are noticeable in pics, though... Not as much in person.
It's actually getting a little armwear, too. I can't seem to capture it, but you can see it in the right angle.
Damn kids, get off my lawn!

Looks cool! About the sound though, I'm thinking of replacing the gold guard on my '59 because it sounds a lot different than a celluoid guard. It's not a sound I really like, reminds me of old Teiscos... well, not quite but you know what I mean? If I can find a vintage 9-hole tort i'll be in heaven but that'll be near impossible.

I go back and forth pretty regularly on my opinion of gold guards.
One month I NEED one!!
The next they make want to vomit.
This just made me NEED one. Thanks a lot.
