Anyone in London got a set of nut files I can borrow?

Post by zhivago » Tue Oct 16, 2007 12:57 pm

hey guys,

I need to widen the slots on my CIJ Jazzmaster...anyone have a set I can borrow?

I've been looking at buying some, but they are too expensive for just using them once :(

I know it's a longshot, but I thought I'd ask.

I've got some files I bought to widen the bridge holes on my JM guard but I doubt they're thin enough to file nut grooves (thats what you mean by nut-files right? Needle files?)

....I just dug them out & checked against my JM's nut. Too fine unfortunately.

There's plenty more for sale & they're cheap.

I've previousy got by with a triangular needle file but it's not perfect by a long chalk.
The cheapest option seems to be this, sold as a nut slotting tool but designed for cleaning welding tips  ???
It's much finer than standard needle files. I've just ordered one so if you're not in a rush I can let you know if it's any good when it comes:

hey thanks for the links guys :)

....yeah, if you could lemme know if that one works that would be great.

I was hoping to have the CIJ ready for gigs by the next gig (December 3rd), but it looks like it's not happening just yet....I wanna set it up just right before I take it onstage with me.

Oh dawn! This thread makes me realize I'll have the same issue with the big low C on my Messblaster !  :(

Is it do-able with thin sandpaper wrapped around a guitar string ? by sliding the string into the nut groove ?

hmmm....dunno...I think a real file would be best, but the string thing might also work....

sure the real thing would be better... I was thinking mainly of me when I talked about the string tip: I'll probably have more difficulties to find someone who have nut filer in Lille than you in London.

And I don't really want to buy nut filler... It would mean another GPR order and I just placed my 3rd in a month !  :o  (they raised their shipping costs to Europe to $9.90...  :( )

hmmm...yeah...thing is, they are pretty expensive as well...I see they are about $70 + shipping + tax

I'll try the string method I think...if worse comes to worse I'll just take it to a tech and have him install a new nut and do the setup at the same time (god save us all!!)

I've got a couple different types bought cheap on eBay and while they work, none of them are ideal.  If you're just touching up I'd recommend these.  They're small, useful for measuring and as a straight edge to check for high frets.  They cut a fairly clean slot too but they're not ideal for cutting from scratch from my experience and they don't have every size you might need depending on your string gauge choice. For 25 pounds though, you'll probably get some decent use out of them.  My only concern with the welder's set is that there isn't anything small enough for an 11 gauge string.  A 16 gauge slot for a string that small will cause all sorts of trouble and eventually when you want to cut a nut from scratch or even deepen a slot you'll have to get something else.

I see....the nut that's on the CIJ is the one I'll be working on...the slots are there already, but they are nowhere near deep enough.

so basicaly I need to add some more depth and some width (as I'll use 11s on it and it looks like it's but for 9s)

would these be ok to do the work on the nut on my CIJ?

I'll buy them if that's the case :)

Oh yeah, they're good for cleaning up slots and lately I've used them as the final step in cutting the nut.
