Let's talk about shellac (not the band)

Post by TheMilford » Tue Oct 30, 2007 12:03 pm

Regarding refinishing my MIJ Jazzmaster...

I just bought Zinser's Sealer (dewaxed) and their BIN white primer. I'm thinking that trying to do a purely acturate refin is sorta futile as it will take me too long to get everything I need (sprayer, fullerplast, reranch stuff, etc.). But I still wanna stain it yellow first so when it wears or chips It'll show through.

what kind of stain can I use under the shellac products?

has anybody else used shellac stuff for a refin?

I need to get this thing up and running.

I guess you can use any stain as long as it is not alcohol based, since you will probably be thinning the Shellac with Alcohol.

But you can also "tint" the Shellac using a pigment made from nutshell (I can't remember what the exact name of the product is. Here it is called "Bister" and it's available in many differnent tints Yellow/brown and the amount used in the shellac will make it daker or lighter)

I have used shellack, but as a French politur Job. But Shellac (apart from French Politur) is earsy to use. Dries quickly, since you use Alcohol as a thinner.

Has anybody used Tints-all? It's a a solid tint... but maybe I can add a little to a regular yellow-ish stain to make it more yellow.

I have used brush-on shellac on necks. It's a better color than Reranch amber for some projects. I have been told it may dry/cure at a different rate of speed from lacquer, but I can't be sure. This could be a good thing because it could cause a crackle effect. In theory, lacquer is spray shellac (unless it is acrylic). Recently I started using a nitro based grain filler WHICH I LOVE. It sands much more like nitro than putty. Shellac is similar. It sands easily as an undercoat.
What's he building in there?

So, Can I use a regular oil-bases stain under the shellac grain filler? Can I add Tints-all to this stain to make it a little more yellow?

will I have problems with:

OIL-BASED STAIN (WITH TINTS-ALL)
SHELLAC GRAIN FILLER (DEWAXED)
SHELLAC PRIMER (B-I-N)
NITRO OLY WHITE
NITRO CLEAR.
