In regards to using the split shaft pots, couldn't you try to find (or fashion )a small metal rectangle to sit in the gap? It seem this would work and it shouldn't bend the shaft tabs either in or out.

I know they make little metal sleeves that fit over the shafts. I don't know who "they" would be, but I know I've seen them...
