Silly Noob question about guitar paint

vintage metallics are acrylic (carpaint) with nitro clearcoat ontop

Nitro?  You're a brave soul then! :)

If you do it when it's cold it'll get moisture under the lacquer and fog (thus requiring you to use 'blush remover' to remelt the lacquer and allow the moisture to escape).
If you do it when it's warm...well...let's say that bugs LOVE nitro, not to mention dust and pollen.

You might be able to get away with it if you fashion some kind of 'booth' out of plastic to shield it from the elements and particles though.

Either way...hold your breath!
