And to be honest, as much as I liked the firebird there is a type of guitar that I absolutely adore over all others that I have neglected for too long now. I was going to use the cash I got from my brother for a firebird but I found a guitar at an insane price, I couldn't say no. Incoming NGD.

Is it a Gibson Sonex? I bet it's a Gibson Sonex.

Every day when I wake up, I spend the first few minutes of my morning staring at the Gibson sonex poster on my ceiling. I whisper "one day, Gibson sonex, you will be mine".

That day has finally come.

I'm a fan of the shape, if not the set neck and scale length.

I've got a bolt-neck 25.5" NR mashup in the works and will probably do a reverse later this year.

The bass versions I built were well received.

You should get one, though. You can keep your subway tokens in the gap between the neck and the body. They thought of everything with that guitar.

I have one of those... in the Pelham blue. Aren't they wonderful? No idea why Gibson quit making those.

That a beauty. Usually with the studio models they stick out as so obviously a "studio" in terms of styling, but those firebirds just look perfect.

With this model, I think the "Studio" moniker means something that (at least attempts) to have more sonic versatility for studio use rather than a slimmed down model with less features. There's all kinds of coil tapping and phase switching on these Firebirds and I don't see that they are made any less elaborately than most other things that Gibson has made as a "non-reverse" Firebird over the years.

The non-reverse Firebirds have always been a little less ornate than the reverse Firebirds.

Although I did come to find out that these Firebirds are made with a body that is more slim than the earlier 60's non-reverse 'Birds were.

It was never all that clear to me exactly what Gibson was shooting for with these, it's got three P90s with Strat type switching, and the coils can be tapped which is an attempt to make it sound like a Stratocaster or something. Like, you could take this places and have all the P90s you ever wanted and also have Stratocaster sounds is the theory- I never use the coil taps. I never feel like they sound like Fender pickups at all.

So if this was Gibson's latest attempt to compete with the Stratocaster I think it's a bizarre attempt.

Regardless, though, the guitar is a complete winner, beautiful and with an amazing neck on there- wide across the nut, it really feels a lot more like an acoustic in a lot of ways. No neck dive, just a great playing and sounding guitar.

They sold out quickly... and aren't easy to find used. And when you do, the price is higher than it was when they were new. That's usually a sign that something was made well, since they aren't all that old.
