NGD - Squier JV Strat 10/82

Post by MattK » Sat Dec 02, 2017 11:31 pm

Well - I got a pretty good deal on this so I went for it out of pure curiosity - I have an early A serial Fender Japan JM, and an SQ serial Squier Tele, and now I've crossed the threshold into JV territory (and 1982, the initial run of guitars with the large Squier on the headstock). Next stop Fender JV I suppose, but I'd need to sell my car or something.
Anyway, this is BEAUTIFULLY made, dark rosewood neck, frets in good shape, but must have been played a lot given the wear on the output jack plate. Basswood body I think, I've seen a photo of the neck pocket (10/82) but didn't open it to check myself.
When it arrived it sounded kind of weird, with a strange almost distorted overtone to the clean sound. When I switched the strings for my usual 11s / wound 3rd, I discovered the nut was loose. A couple dots of superglue and it's all snug and clean-sounding. Wonder how long it had sounded bad.
Neck's lovely, body contours are so slick and the only non-original thing is a DiMarzio something bridge pickup. I'm not a Strat guy but I am for this and my '77 Greco.
One thing I find interesting is that in 1982, this was a replica of a '62 Strat, which was a 20 year old guitar at the time. But now this Squier is 35 years old, even more vintage than its inspiration. And I'd say it was built with the same care and skill as the original.

Aw, thanks - a sunburst Strat is about as unremarkable as it gets, but this is a nice one!

I may buy a similar neck but I want to make sure that it will fit the body I already have.

No problem - I have a pretty good set of steel calipers and they report that the width at the widest point is exactly 56.0 mm (just past the 21st fret). That's measured on the side of the fretboard but I think the maple underneath is the same width.
Any other measurements you need, just let me know!

Nice!

I have an '86 MIJ '62 reissue, so it's the same deal in the sense that the guitar is older than the "vintage" model it was recreating at the time!

I know that the JV's are supposed to be something special, but even my '86 is a hell of a guitar. Kicked off my love affair with '80s Japanese Fenders!

Congrats.

That's a lovely thing.

Not sure how I feel about the pickup covers and knobs not matching, or whether that adds to the charm a bit.
a total idiot jackass

Somehow it's the opposite way round on my 1977 Greco, which came from the same factory 5 years previous!

wow. beautiful stratocaster.
there's something cool about all the different colours of the plastics. those last two pickup covers are so yellow. is that natural aging?

Yes - same as computer cases of the era. It's clearly related to exposure, either oxygen or light, since the yellow stops at the level of the pickguard and the cover is white below that. I have a 1985 Jazzmaster from the same factory and the pickup covers went the same hideous orange.
Thanks for the nice comments guys - we all know the purpose of buying a guitar is to make people jealous on the internet, right?

I finally sat down and gave this a good workout this evening. Holy crap, I get it about good Strats now. It feels alive in the hand.

Well, that's the thing about good Fenders of every kind. Strats and Teles aren't my main thing, but I've played a few that have just plain knocked my socks off.

Brief update - bought a 70s Greco pickup from Leddin Vintage to replace the horrid, anaemic DiMarzio bridge pickup. It's a beautiful match for the SQ-5s sound-wise, and is bright and chimey in all the right ways. Dave even threw in an old oxidised 80s pickup cover which is rather a good match. This is now a sensational guitar.

Shit, my daughter is turning 18 in six weeks and she has *really* bonded with this guitar. Looks like I will have to give it to her. Dammit.
