I have large hands, and I really enjoyed my limited time playing a vintage Ric 330-12

The thing is, you're definitely in the minority there. It's not impossible to play in the first position, but if you want the top E to ring out when you play a C chord, you have to place your fingers more like a classical player would - i.e. at +/- 90 degrees to the board. Us lazy pop guitar players just don't do that naturally.

I assumed the problem was me when I found I couldn't play a C chord on a 360/12, then I read Roger McGuinn saying he'd had to re-learn how to play when he got his, so I didn't feel so bad. My work-around is to just mostly stay away from the first position, either with capo use or choice of chord inversions, but you shouldn't have to have a work-around on a £2k+ guitar!!!

The Hagstrom 12s are great - both vintage and reissue. They have twin truss rods which allows super skinny necks.

i love my danelectro 12. sold a Ric 12 and i'm happy with it.

i've thought about getting another and reversing the string order (like a Ric) for fun.

so, i went ahead and switched the string order.

i've only played it a few times so far...and not with my regular amp...so, i don't have a real review, but i can say this:

it doesn't make it sound like a Ric; but it definitely sounds better. it is "softer, having the bass strings on top mellows the sound out quite a bit

Interesting.. I always wondered how switching the strings around to the Ric pattern would sound.

I did the exact opposite of what you did - I sold my Danelectro Cherry Sunburst semi-hollow 12 when I bought a Ric 360/12. I do love the Ric, but wish now that I had kept the Dano as well.. I really did like that guitar..
