NBD - Picked up a ‘75 P-Bass with tons of Mojo

Post by Fuzzbuzz » Fri Oct 19, 2018 6:47 pm

Picked up this 1975 P-Bass today. Tons of honest wear. Nice finish checking. I pulled the pickguard off and the finish is much more brighter White. This bass was loved. Everything is original with exception the the pickguard and the wiring harness. I actually found an original pickguard on Reverb for a decent price. The nut needs to be replaced. Can’t wait to get it setup!

Awesome! Does it live up to the 70's Fender reputation of being a boat anchor?

Not that that's a bad thing. I actually prefer the sustain that a heavier bass gives.

Yeah, it’s not light. 10lb’s. Not the worst I have seen, but not the best either.

Interesting. Mine's a '71 and it's super light, around 8lbs 6 oz. Same finish.

Love these earlier CBS Precisions

Reminds me of my grandad's (76-78, I can't remember). Suuuuuper heavy, ugly finish, huge neck pocket, but sounds better than any other bass.

Sweet. Amazing how dark that headstock got.

I have seen it on others before. I’m guessing it’s from years and years cigarette smoke reacting with the lacquer? I mean this thing darkened and yellowed substantially. The finish under the pickguard is significantly lighter.

That’s ugly-beautiful. I hope it doesn’t stink!

Will it be getting a white pickguard?

Haha. Thanks. I am really loving the way it looks. About 15 years ago I had a ‘78 in sunburst that was wearing nicely. Nowhere near the checking that this one has though. There is an ever so faint smell of smoke but it also has a smell of old guitar case which I have to admit, is not unpleasant by any means.

No, I think I’m going to stick with a black pickguard. If I do go white it will be this one.

Welcome to the '75 P-bass club! I've got one as well, and it's going to my grave with me. Curious about your tuners. Mine are like nickle or something. They aren't chrome, like ever other tuning machine I've had on any guitar ever. Are yours like that too?

Yeah, mine appear to be nickel as well. As a matter of fact, I kind of though most hardware on fender basses were nickel up to the early 80’s? I could be wrong, but I’m sure my ‘72 Jazz and my ‘78 P were all nickel as well.

I honestly don't the answer about the tuners. I've never been able to get it sorted, although I suppose I could run it up the flag pole over at Talkbass, in between the endless debates of P Bass Vs. Jazz, and why Fender sucks.

Haha! Seriously. Too many days getting sucked into a forum wormhole only to realize most people are just over-opinionated pricks/experts on everything.
