Custom DG-20 Guitar Finished Pg. 4

Post by HNB » Tue Mar 19, 2019 3:42 pm

I was watching Weezer's "Take on Me" video and saw the Casio DG-20 in it. I thought it looked so cool but learned it is a synth and made of plastic.... So then I had an idea...

You gonna put some hex pickups and a synth in there? Or maybe some Variax electronics?

It needs to have something complicated electronically inside there, if you ask me.

Love the DG-20, only time I've ever seen one used is for this banger (WARNING: not for those adverse to musical comedy) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-sawvtJxDI

Wait, these things are from 1987? My secondary school still had a bunch of these in the music room when I left in 2009!

Or the higher production value one from their TV show.

It's also the only place I know it from. Never thought this would come up organically, but my wife and I actually did our first dance to that song. Started out as a slow dance to a traditional Hawaiian song and then broke out into a dancehall routine to FOTC.

I've only ever seen one in a Boris video. I think. The whole video was intentionally blurry.

Flight of the Conchords used one ("It's from a pawn shop from the future" or similar).
Casio also made "real" guitars:
MG510 - strat with midi
MG500 - awesomeness with midi
PG380 - superstrat with midi and on board sounds
All had on board tuners, too.
The DG-20 had a drum machine, too!

I played a MG500 for a few years ("Darth Vader's Vox Phantom!") but eventually sold it to fund my first Jazzmaster.

(and, yes, I actually just went to myspace to find that photo -- guess what: the music doesn't work!)

I still have the humbucker from it (discovered in a parts box). I can send it down I-5 if you'd like it...

That sounds rad, any vids? I saw them on the first date of their 2019 tour in Dublin and it was a riot, got upgraded seats which never happens to boot.

Some awesome stuff in those links :D I plan to put a plastic covered humbucker in it. I think it will go with the look. I need to figure out knobs that would give it that Casio vibe. :D

The neck is mounted. (Along with my Meteora body next to it.) Bridge, pickups, and shaping still to come.

I am going to paint it grey so it looks similar to the inspiration. :)

Funke and the Two Tone Baby used one on his EP Injustice and Queen.

I know this because he borrowed mine. I forget which track it was used on but it's on a solo towards the end. It's fairly obvious!

PS, that's going to look badass as a real guitar. Have you "carved" the top the same?

Should have the sameish angled top parts. :D You can see the pencil lines in the body picture. Just not angled down yet. :D

Amazing! I am so excited on this progress picture!! You can see the added angles in the pic well. It is mimicking the original pretty well!
