Help with Japanese Tele wiring

I'm putting a new set of pickups into a friend's Japanese Tele. It has the typical Japanese selector switch, where all the terminals are in a row.
Everything is fine except the middle position of the selector, which is only giving the neck pickup (instead of both). I checked that the last 2 spots on the switch were wired together, and I think all solder joints are good.
The bridge pickup is fine on its own....any ideas why It is not working in the middle position?
