Yeah, I feel that they must perfume it or something. No reason not to, I guess. They smell like vanilla but not quite just that- it's a wonderful smell and I miss it when it goes.
Martins smell great also, they smell like wood, though, not perfume.

I had a anew Gibson SG bass for a while, smelled intensely like a cross between vanilla and banana. Maybe something that happens with a nitro finish?

Might be. New G&L guitars have a distinctive smell, too. According the guys at the factory, it comes from the cases, not the finish.

Re: NGW: New Gibson Week
Vanilla. Or ... like some sort of caramel.
I remember walking into Rosetti's store on Denmark Street about 6/7 years ago ... I think the majority of the hanging stock was made up of new Gibsons. That smell ... it was like the smell of opening the case on a new Gibson dialled up by a factor of 100! A combination of a small store space, every part of it covered in guitars and a lack of air circulation.
But still, I love that smell.
I've had my reissue ES345 for over a year now - it's been kept in it's case when not used, but it's been used every day. It still reeks of that smell every time I open the case.

The SG is capable of being incredibly beefy sounding, so much so, that I have named it "Trogdor the Burninator!" Because, you know, Beefy Arm.

Re: NGW: New Gibson Week
It's not complicated at all and is actually easier [for me] to wrap my head around when wiring up than regular strat wiring. On my strat I have regular 5 way with master vol+tone on all pickups and a mini toggle to get neck+bridge. All 3 pickups is not a particularly useful sound imo.
On my firebird, I actually want to pull the middle pickup coz it seems pretty pointless!

Re: NGW: New Gibson Week
I would also, but I have an anodized aluminum pickguard on there and it would leave a big hole where the third pickup had been.
I also thought about just disconnecting the middle pickup entirely, leaving it in there.
One day I'll put some Kinman pickups in it and will change all the wiring at that point. As it is now, it's very complicated, with push pull knobs and such, coil tapping and phase switching. I'll streamline all that stuff.

Re: NGW: New Gibson Week
Update- My pal Dustin, who is also a fantastic luthier, has been working on my two LP-type guitars and is just about finished. We put the Duncan Antiquities and the Emerson harness in the LP Studio and then put the PUPs and harness from the Studio into the Love Rock. I should get them back this week.
