What IS this? Weird vintage bass on eBay

Post by Ceylon » Tue Jul 02, 2019 11:27 am

So, although here is an eBay link I just want to start off by saying I have no affiliation to this seller. I was thinking of picking this thing up just because I have never seen anything like it, but it looks like it might get sort of pricey.

But what is this thing? The tuners are the same that you'll find on plenty of Japanese 60's and 70's basses. The body is not only semi-hollow but also weirdly Shergold-meets-Ovation-like-but-not-quite, painted in what looks like plastic house paint. The pickups and mounting rings look 80's, out of the ordinary, like they might be European. But the weirdest part is the bridge, because I haven't ever really seen anything like it, and while it seems to fit in there's what looks like a tab/holder for a trapeze-style stringholder attached to the bottom of it.

Could it be Italian or German with a non-original neck and bridge?

haha, damn I was hoping no one else had spotted this... it's 10 miles from me :fp: ;D

Not gonna be the one who says what it is, cos then it's google-alertable and I want it to remain under the radar, but it's almost certainly been modded. Those pickups and neck is at the very least not typical of those found on these, though I did find one other with that sort of neck. The bridge, body, paint etc are all original and typical of this maker.

In a way it's nothing hugely exciting...if it goes higher than the (pretty low) amount I'd be prepared to pay, I'll spill the beans, or DM me and I'll say, or maybe someone else will blab ;)

Just finished, got outbid, cos I wasn't gonna go more than 150 all in, given that it's basically a parts guitar with a barely there finish.

Loosely speaking it's a Hayman 50/50 bass, which normally look like this https://reverb.com/ca/item/4849646-haym ... -very-rare but that neck is totally unlike the usual ones...looks Japanese to me?

There's another one on this example, so who knows whether they are some prototype, or just assembled from parts by someone else https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/ ... -471121246

and as I said above...unlikely that those pickups are original
