To sell a custom project or just the neck... Looking for input.

Post by AWSchmit » Tue Jul 09, 2019 7:36 am

I'm contemplating selling my custom project Preacher 1, but I wanted to get the groups thoughts on the matter. Pics below, then under that my reasons for selling and if selling is a viable option.

Typical spec for me when buying a neck is Vintage Fender spec but with a thick deep V boat neck. I usually buy from Warmoth. For this project I wanted a big CBS headstock, but Warmoth only sells them on the vintage modern construct, not straight vintage. Why I have no idea. Anyway. so I decided I;d try their 10 to 16" radius with all of my normal specs, which include: Boat neck, Vintage small frets, vintage style tuner ream, etc.

Well, turns out I don't love the neck. I guess I need 7.25 radius after all. Aside from that I love the guitar, in general though I am finding it somewhat redundant in my guitar collection as a whole which makes me want to try to just sell the whole thing. the only issue is, as most of you know, custom projects can be a hard sell. Part of me wants to try to just sell the neck and use that money to buy another one and call it good, while another part of me wants to try to sell the whole thing.

Since it's got a lacquer finish, but is also used, I would like to sell the neck alone for $200 with no tuners or hardware, and logo removed of course (It's over the finish)
Or sell the whole thing for $500, with no case.

Your thoughts on either idea? Think it would go? trying to decide before taking it apart. Thanks.
I finally finish building a guitar, go to play it, and then remember, "oh yeah, that's right. I suck at playing... Why did I build another guitar again?"

I really love the finish job you did and imho it would look great with a tele headstock. So I think you should sell off this neck and replace with a new neck.

Swap the neck. That's too beautiful and unique of a guitar to just sell after putting all that effort in (IMO, of course).

If the guitar still feels redundant, change the pickups. Just about EVERY pickup known to man can hide under a JM cover.

The neck looks wrong for the guitar, which is itself pretty cool. Ditch the neck

I agree. A skinny Danelectro/Silvertone-style 6 in line headstock might look cool on that.

My thoughs. Make it a short-scale, if that's possible :)

have you considered doing something artistic on the existing neck, to pick up on the theme that is on the body? Maybe have some fun with it and then have an art piece that gives you pleasure? maybe dye the fretboard and decorate it, or do some inlay work or marquetry?

This. Get a chunky vintage style Tele neck and slap it on. It'll be awesome. I mean, your guitar is already Creston-level fantastic.

If I could get a 24" or a Gibson scale neck in the right back profile and a 7.25" radius I think I would be all about that... It would suit the small scale of the body I think. Good suggestion.

Sounds like everyone is saying sell the neck.. So I'm leaning that way now... I might try selling the neck and the loaded body separately and see how that goes. Thank you all for your thoughts and your compliments. Very much appreciated.
