Incoming NGD

Post by cincinnatiharry » Mon Nov 11, 2019 1:54 pm

So I actually got this delivered today, but after work I took it straight to my luthier...

This is a “Chickenbacker” 360v64

It played surprisingly good out of the box but I took it to the luthier to have a ebony fingerboard put on it, jumbo stainless steel frets, and a more traditional trapeze tail piece fitted. I have requested no inlays on the new fret board.

Unlike a real Rickenbacker this thing is pretty much routed out solid maple, versus a laminate construction.

It’s interesting and will be more so when it is done.

As far as I know, Rickenbacker bodies are not made of laminated wood. They are made one or two big pieces of solid wood that are routed from the back to build the main part of the body. Then the neck, which can be made of several parts, is glued onto the body. Finally, a thin back is glued onto the guitar to enclose everything.

I understand the “top” or most of the guitar body is solid maple, routed out. The “back”, however, is 2 or 3 ply maple laminate.

As far as I know, the back is solid wood, only the neck is laminated. But I'm not 100% certain on that. I own a fireglo 360, by the way.

Nope, you're right, the thin back is laminated. It says so in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEuqgZzKxC4
