I've been thinking about a Firebird-equipped guitar for a while now, and was thinking about a homemade Explorer-type body for it. Because of this thread, last night I had a very vivid dream about a Firebird-equipped V that is giving me ideas...
I've been waiting on a pair of Firebirds under PAF sized covers from Sunday Handwound, they're going into my sunburst V. Great minds and all that 8)

I had been considering a custom build with a Firebird neck and everything, but the builder I was talking to kept falling behind on answering e-mails, and I ended up with too many Vs anyway while he dragged his feet. So that plan is dead and I'm just going with the Firebird pickups in an existing V.

It's too bad that that plan died, but both sound amazing! What would be cool, if I already had the skills to do so, would be a neck-through V, with a raised middle like a Firebird, and 2 halves of a pickguard on either side of it.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was imagining, neck-through with the thinner wings, except I was thinking of just doing a treble-side guard like a Firebird. I was gonna do the carved headstock with the Steinberger tuners, binding and trapezoid blocks like a proper FB too.

I really only knew of one luthier who would be able to do all that for a reasonable price, but I think he just got overwhelmed with orders. Every time I'd contact him, he'd basically say, "Oh, I'm so sorry, I must have lost track of your last e-mail!" And we'd get a little farther into planning it, but then a month or two would go by with no response until I bugged him again, and he'd apologize again, and then forget to answer for another two months.

So, I took that as a sign that I should abandon the project, especially since I found some really nice Vs through local trades and deals as the glacially-paced e-mails went back and forth.

If you want to take up the mantle and find someone to build you a Firebird-V hybrid, I'd love to see it when it's done! It would be such a fun guitar and would sound amazing for sure.

I'm wondering if the idea is just cursed or something, because I gave up on the idea back in October and ordered those pickups for my sunburst V, and they have yet to arrive. So despite my best efforts, I still don't have my Firebird-sounding V. I just sent Tim a message to check in and see what's up. If I can't get my hands on those pickups, I might just go the DIY route and screw some Firebird pickup rings onto the guard, I checked and they'd cover the existing routs. Then I can stick any old FB pickups in there instead of getting specialty ones made.

CME had a popa chubby for short change last week (didn’t last long) and I thought about grabbing one again to put a set of birds in.
I’m gonna stick with my original plan and have already hogged out my vintera.

That sounds amazing. Do you mean that you would've had a Firebird headstock shape on a V body?! :w00t: The idea of a reverse Firebird head on a V makes me feel a little funny ;)

Man, I hate when things fall apart because of communication like that. I totally understand getting busy, but especially having a business, people should be checking on and updating emails every day or two at least. That's frustrating as hell.

I really want a Firebird-equipped guitar. I was thinking about a Pear Dream/Fax Apollo/Artemis with some FB pickups, but now I'm not so sure...Thankfully I don't need to decide anything for a bit yet, as I've got a few projects in need of finishing (or starting for the few I've been talking about for a few years now).[/quote]

Yeah, the plan was for it to be a Firebird neck with V body, so I wanted the carved reverse Firebird headstock. I think it's one of the most attractive headstocks ever put on a guitar.

But yeah, such is life. If I come across a luthier who can do all that for a reasonable price, maybe I'll sell a couple of Vs and make it happen. At this point, I'll just be happy if I can finally get some Firebird pickups. Delays seem to be the name of the game.

I do too. Much like the Peavey necks that HNB uses (and Tele headstocks that I personally love), it goes well on almost everything.

If you ever get that project off the ground, make sure to post it! I'll do the same!

This was recently gifted and is the only flying V that I have. It's horrific. There are built in tunes (e.g. baby shark theme song) but the fretted notes aren't even in tune with any of the songs. It does have a compound neck carve though.

Trying to resist this Edwards V from Japan:

Image

It's listed for under $1k CAD, but shipping is another 25% on top. Edwards is ESP's domestic MIJ brand that makes lawsuit guitars. I guess something about them not exporting them keeps them immune from litigation, because they've been at it for decades.

It's a bound V with small block inlays and Duncan ('59 neck, JB bridge) pickups. If I was feeling irresponsible, this one would already be on its way to Stike for a flashy sparkle refin. I just can't do another black V...I have four, and they're black with white guard, black with black guard, black-edged sunburst with white guard, and white with black guard.

If I get another V, it's got to be wearing an outfit that would be RuPaul blush.

My main problem is that I already have too many Vs, and have no idea which one I'd let go. They all feel amazing to play and are all surprisingly distinct from one another.

I doubt I'd have the heart to sell one, but if I did, I'd be rocking this Edwards in a sparkleburst of some kind in a heartbeat.

Yeah. Looks great. That one came up in my reverb feed as well and I can't make up any excuse to pick it up unless I have some sort of fire sale of gear that I have.

This surfaced in my algorithm, and aside from the cuteness of the near shell pink, it’s also pretty cute.

Cute V

I like the pickguard shape, and how the pots are centered :-*
