I'm virtually certain that your guitar will have "fretless wonder" frets. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on them. I think they are amazing. That being said, I've never owned a guitar with them.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Really? I thought those were a 70s thing. I hope you’re right. Some of those necks from the 70s LPs I’ve played felt so nice

I think they debuted on the Custom model as soon as the Custom model itself did.

Here you go. Anyway, assuming that they are on there, which would be historically accurate, I think you'll find that it'll play very differently than other guitars you have. It'll reward a light touch and subtlety.

I have a new amp coming tomorrow that would be a great match for this guitar. :shifty:

That's gonna be a different thread though...
Fun times man. Gonna make us play the guessing game? Haha
Nah, not into the guessing game threads. It should be in my hands in a couple of hours, so I'll throw up a thread in the proper section.

I think they'll be right about .100" wide and about .045" tall at the 12th fret, just like my '03 R6 and '09 R4BB. They'll be both taller and narrower than wide/flat 70s frets.

And they'll be absolutely delightful. ;D

Nice. Either way I’m sure they’ll be great. On another note tracking just got put in and it should be here Monday. I won’t be able to contain myself until then. I’m trying to figure out what pickups they used in these back in 96’. With the model being a 57’ you would think 57’ reissue, but the current ones have burstbuckers.

Yeah, '57 Classics sounds right.

I hope you've got a busy weekend planned to keep you occupied. :D

I hope so. I’ve always wanted to try those pups. I was a huge System of a Down fan in high school when I first started dabbling in guitar music. Daron’s 61RI SG had those 57s in them if I remember right. There’s actually a prominent YouTube blues lawyer type playing this exact year and model with the Bigsby. If those pups in that thing are the original I’m going to be happy. Of course, I can’t play that good, and I’ll be doing silly shoegaze and ambient stuff 50% of the time so it really won’t matter what the pups sound like :D

And no, of all weekends I got nothing going on. I work from home and I typically take a jog on my lunch break when the fed-ex man comes. If he by chance passes me on my run, there’s no way I’m not chasing that truck

Is that right, Tom? I thought the reissues were reissues of the Les Paul Standard? Or did they make Custom reissues also? I mean, I don't know, I just always thought the Customs had different frets than the Standards.

Like I say, I don't know and I'm sure you do. Personally I like those low and flat frets, but they aren't on all 70's Gibsons, my Marauder has pretty standard Gibson fret wire not dissimilar to what they use now.

One thing I’ve read is that they all had jumbo frets in the beginning and because they were played so much they constantly got leveled which led to the fretless wonder verbiage. Probably not accurate at all so don’t quote me.

From what I understand they were a distinct fret on the Customs.

You can see some here.

But, what know is all secondhand. You'll tell us soon. And I don't know that they used the Fretless Wonder frets on all the Customs throughout the years.

I'd love to have one of those Customs! They sure are beautiful! The weight with a Bigsby is really light. My Classic weighs a couple POUNDS more than that. I've gotten used to it though. After playing my Travis Bean for so many years, weight doesn't bother me too much. I'm not standing with it for hours at a time though. It might be a different story in that case. Here's mine... also in the best color (for a LP 8) ):

There you have it. I think just about every 70s and maybe 80s Les Paul I ever held had those. With that said, I’ve never held a custom that wasn’t from that era. I’ll report the findings and I’ll try to get some good pics of them.

Thank you! That’s a classy looking instrument you have there yourself! The chrome looks great on it. I bet it sounds great with that heft and those p90s. And I tend to agree about the black, although the dark wine red (not the brighter red/scarlet color) is a close second for me. Although sometimes I’d like to channel my inner Randy Rhodes and get a white one to try.
