That looks amazing. But I know I'd hate the neck being all flimsy feeling

Best advice in a long time.
Bonus line: …that you can (at least barely, but still clearly) afford.

That said, my LP-GAS really isn‘t itching atm…but a Wine Red (non Custom, so) Standard or whatever those models are called, WITH (at least top) Binding would still be welcome! And so would be a certain standard faded tobacco burst model. (I „just“ have a 60s Tribute Studio in Honey Burst with sadly NO binding and an Epiphone Classic (with)).
A Les Paul is a fine guitar. And in my opinion: much more beautiful and desireable than those other classics (Strat, Tele and SG)… But obviosly tastes differ - so no offense… at least we can all agree on Jags and JMs).

I ALWAYS wanted a gold top with p90s. Couldn’t swing the Custom Shop prices though. When they first came out with those Tributes about 15 years ago, I tried to buy one. They sold out fast at the time and the scalpers jacked the prices up. I ended up getting an SG with p90s instead (still have and love it.. bought it new in ‘09). I never fully got over not having an LP with p90s though. A few years ago I noticed those Classics they did for a year or two with them and opted for that instead. Mines black a black though and I sometimes wish it were gold. But then I plug it in and I forget about the color :D It is unchambered and heavy as FUCK with a Bigsby, Vibramate, AND Grovers. But I don’t mind. SO, maybe check out these Classics from about 2018 or so. Way cheaper than Custom Shop but still a solid player. And they DID make gold tops too.

I could never afford a Gibson. So, the next to last guitar that I bought was an Epiphone, "56 Gold Top." It has P90s and is just wonderful to play. Highly recommended for those with a limited budget.

Here is a link to one. Oddly, mine came with black pickup covers and a black switch ring.

Gold tops are nice. My favourite for a Les Paul is a black top with a plain mahogany back.
I don’t think I’ll own another. I find them uncomfortable to sit and play, and I like a guitar you can sit with.
I don’t always want to have the thing strapped on.

For a long time I've wanted one with P90s, but without the poker chip around the switch. I'd be anxious about buying one with it and just removing the poker chip myself in case I take some of the finish off with it. I saw an old Edwards lawsuit model on eBay that pretty much fitted the bill, and for what I would consider to be a pretty decent price, but it disappeared before I could muster up the courage to take the plunge on an instrument sight unseen, and then by the time it got relisted months later I had already bought a new guitar and couldn't justify another.

I've always wanted an LP Custom black beauty too, but the prices those often command are absolutely insane. I've wondered a few times about buying one of those DIY kits, because I like projects, but I'm very sceptical about the quality.

Keeping an eye out for more recent Deluxes would be an option too. It's an easy pickup swap. The run from the 2004/5 aren't priced terribly and are good guitars. I've got a black one like this. They did wine red and gold tops. The neck profile is a little bit beefier than a slim taper, but is by no means big.

I've got a goldtop lacquer series Tokai w/ p90's. It kicks the shit out of the Gibson CS equivalent I tried. It's one of the most versatile models about I think. Gotta have one!

Tom, what are the frets like on those later Deluxe models? Are they the modern Gibson fret wire or possibly the low and flat 70's style the original ones have?
