Gibson Garage London

Post by sal paradise » Sun Feb 25, 2024 1:38 am

Opened this weekend. I was going to soho to pick up some records, so might take a peek. Apparently there was a long queue rotund, middle-aged white men waiting to get in yesterday.

They made & sold 20 Noel Gallagher/Marr Les Paul’s at £10k each, with all profits going to charity. A few on Reverb already.

Seems like a good use of the artist space they’ve had for years, and means there’s a place to actually try out their mod/demo guitars. That said, this just seems like another overpriced guitar shop, and one that seems to stick two fingers up at any official dealer in town.

I'm going to wait for the crowds to die out a bit and check it out on a weekday morning in a couple of months.

It is really cool to finally have a decent selection of Gibson guitars of all ranges at a shop ready to try...we never really had that in London.

Plus, I've been meaning to pick up a Firebird t-shirt forever....they might have them in stock. 8)

I think we all need to get used to the fact that guitar manufacturers are going the way of the Apple Store with locations like this...Fender has that awesome shop in Japan and I expect a European one to be in the cards somewhere too in the future.

The times they are a-changin'.

I'll probably pop in if I'm in the area at some point to have a look. I'm definitely not the sort of guy to pay new Gibson money on a new Gibson but it'll be cool to see

On one hand, it'll be very...Gibson. Not that I have anything against Gibson guitars per se (I like mine very much) but I'm sure I won't be able to buy anything from it and there's something a bit depressing about how it'll largely be patronised by rich, paunchy men in distressed Rolling Stones t-shirts.

On the other, I'm in favour of anything in London and especially Soho and the West End that isn't another designer fashion chain store or bar/restaurant for pretentious yuppies, and especially a guitar shop. So for that reason I hope it sticks around for a while.

I went in yesterday. Pretty busy but I managed to play a few very nice guitars - a Murphy lab 1933 L-00, a shell pink junior, and the 20k Greeney thing. Loads of merch too, I noticed Thunderbird hats so you might be in luck Zhivago. SixtySixty probably won’t be happy it’s here, but with them doing second hand and their customised stuff I think they can differentiate enough.

I did think about Sixty Sixty, and you're right, their focus is pretty different. It's basically a guitar boutique, it's clearly centred around the Denmark Street experience (whatever that is now) and vintage guitars. It's also clearly got a good bit of money behind it, so it'll probably be fine for the time being.

Of course it's an SG. Oh well, no temptation there then

I'm thinking about driving back up from FL to STL in April and might stop at the Nashville location since I've got to go through there anyway. It's probably not a good idea for me to go unsupervised.

Les Paul. Single cut. The neck was a bit more substantial than I like, but that didn't deter 20 odd minutes of playing it.

Probably the same as this one that was on reverb. It's a hard shade to photograph.

Edit: a photo of the actual guitar on the conveyor hangar thing

Yeah, that's lovely. Too much money though. I'd rather spend 1100 on a used sunburst and 50 quid on some nitro cans and do it myself

Exactly my thoughts. There’s a stripped 2020 on reverb that would be perfect but they want the same as one that’s still got the original finish.
