Hey, that's a Kirby isn't it!? My parents have about three different ones, of varying vintages  The one had been going strong for about 25 years and then they gave it to us. It took about 3 weeks for it to break. I couldn't believe it.

My vacuum is  special order red panasonic!  I got it form a guy named ziggy!  If you ever move to Eau Claire and need a vacuum, he's the guy!  It's got about 3 pounds of powdered poly finish and ripped up floral print paper in the dust bag right now.

Great choice!

You've got the right idea- raise the stock pickups up a bit and you've got that classic Tele bite and snarl at your fingertips.  There is no need to swap out the pickups, but that's not to say that doing so isn't fun.  I've got Lollars in my thinline and they're awesome.  But the stock pup in my 50's Esquire can really bring the roar and the twang.  The steel saddles will add to the twang and the bite, so if you're looking for that, keep 'em; if you want more rounded, bottom-heavy sounds, go for brass.  Either way, you win.

It's kind of mellow in comparison to my squier, but thats a top loader, that thing is like a $100 attack dog.  I'll probably leave it stock, for tonal variety.
