Scalloped Necks

Post by Naturality » Mon Feb 12, 2007 8:58 am

What is the advantage of scalloped necks (if any)
I can't think of any, although do is make the fretboard really angled to play on, which would be harder, wouldn;t it?

the "advantage" is that since there´s no wood under your fingertips, you can bend easier, and you don´t have to press the strings as hard, thus making shredding much easier. it also makes tapping a lot easier.

yeah but a disadvantage is that if you press harder you push the strings down (because theres no wood under your fingers) and the notes go up.

Okay thanks, I still don't want a scalloped neck. Sounds horrible to play

It apparently does wonders for hair, as well.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. I have reasons to believe that Ritchie Blackmore's hair is not all his own.

a scalloped neck will most certainly help you unleash the "focking fury"...

confirmed. a friend's girlfriend did the deep purples hair yrs. ago,
and most of it was fake, she was wondering what she was supposed to dress.  ::)

i had a scalloped strat for  a while.

even with light gauge strings, it was hard to push the notes out of tune by pressing hard.

it did indeed force me to play softer, and in turn faster. that aspect has taken to all other guitars i play as well.

that being said, i sold the strat, glad to see it go.

I've played a scalloped fretboard before, on a Warmoth strat, it did not make that much of a difference to me whatsoever.  I play just as fast on my unscalloped Jaguar neck.

my strat neck 12 and above is slightly scalloped, but not on purpose, drum sticks ruin the fretboard and the frets might i say.

i didn't notice it making me faster, but i was a lot more conscience of how i played. pressure, power, vibrato, etc.

i feel it really did improve my hard handed style, and left me with more finesse.

buuuut, thats just me.
